I was privileged to catch up with the legendary Brian Blessed at the Derbyshire Business Awards on Friday night, not only is Brian a great raconteur but to my amazement he is a great explorer and has incredible goals and dreams for what he still wants to achieve.
Perhaps most remarkably for a septuagenarian is the ambition to go into Space.
Towards the end of the awards ceremony he summed up his mantra, which put very simply was:
" I just go for It!"
And as a final riposte he shouted across the room in his unique style: " Follow your Dreams... Don't let the B****rds Get you Down!" What a wonderful quote, which I have already typed out and put above my desk.
Earlier in the week I was speaking at a seminar in the excellent new Derby Quad and a key point I was looking for the attendees to take away was how vital it is in the current climate to maintain a Positive Mindset and to ensure you are doing whatever it takes to overcome the challenges and setback that will inevitably be thrown in our path.
So what can you do starting from today to ensure that you are in the very best shape to front up to the challenging times ahead?
1. Develop a Positive Mindset
To survive and flourish in this economy, it is vital that you Act. There are opportunities in all tough situations, and instead of allowing the Recession Mindset to take hold i.e. bunker down and believe that you can somehow get through this thing, I want you to think about developing a Positive mindset. This mindset will prepare you for the tough road ahead, and enable you to be in control and take advantage of opportunities that will present themselves. When you develop a positive mindset you simply choose not to participate in the recession. In fact, you now see it quite differently from everyone else and that is what sets you apart.
2. Create more self-time and less TV time
The BBC and ITV and rest of the media live for Bad news, all their images are designed to pry on our fear and vulnerability-so I would urge you to watch less of it. Now is the time for Action, not opinion.
You have to believe in yourself. Whether you call it self-esteem, self-confidence, or self-assurance, it is a deep-seeded belief that you have what it takes - the abilities, inner resources, talents, and skills to create your desired results.
Ultimately, you must learn to control your self-talk, eliminate any negative and limiting beliefs, and maintain a constant state of positive expectations.
4. Attitude
Develop a Can Do attitude. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
5. Surround yourself with Positive People
Now is the time to avoid the pity party, make sure that you are connecting with those who have a positive mental attitude and are taking the right actions to make things happen. Find a great mentor who will help to keep you focused and alert to opportunities.
6. Resolve
What a great word "Resolve". Resolve that you will do whatever you need to do in order to move towards your goals, to overcome procrastination, and overcome all barriers and challenges that will come your way.
7. Take Action
If you are going to follow your dreams, then it is imperative that you Take Action. Work up a plan and then work on executing your plan every single day. Never, ever give up and never, ever let the B*****rds get you down!
7.5 And Finally ... Congratulations
Congratulations to all those companies nominated for awards at the ceremony last night and the eventual winners in the Seven different categories. You are already playing the game hard and are an inspiration for the rest of us.
To your continued success.
