From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Celebration Luncheon on November 17 at the Palais Royale. It was a great time to celebrate what you helped accomplish in 2010 and to hear directly from the families who have been helped. One young mother, when asked what her new Habitat house meant to her, said, "For the first time, my children can go outside and ride their bikes and I'm not worried about their safety." Friends, your support of Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County has made a significant impact on our community in 2010. Ten families, including 22 children under the age of thirteen, received a Habitat home this year. Can you imagine how significant this Christmas will be for them? You helped make it happen. Thank you.

Grant spotlight: Neighborhood Stabilization Program

The Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) was established for the purpose of stabilizing communities that have recently suffered from foreclosures and abandonment. Through the purchase and redevelopment of foreclosed and abandoned homes and residential properties, the goal of the program is being realized. There are three different "batches" of NSP funding that are awarded to local governments on either a formula or competitive basis, depending on whether they are NSP-1, NSP-2 or NSP-3 funds.

We have received funding through St. Joseph County Housing Consortium and the City of Mishawaka. These monies are NSP-1 funds that have helped us build three homes this calendar year. In 2011, there are plans for us to receive partial funding for as many as five homes. This assistance is a tremendous help in off-setting construction costs.
