From the Executive Director

Dear Friends, Last Sunday at the World Build House Blessing in Mishawaka, I saw life and humanity at its best. Former strangers, brought together through the common cause of building a home with the Gasigwa family, laughed and talked, connected and celebrated. They were proud of what had been accomplished and inspired by the humble gratitude of a family who had a place to call home after surviving the horrible genocide in Rwanda 16 years ago. Compassion and love for fellow human beings is beautiful. It's what Habitat for Humanity is all about. Each and every human being has the capacity to change the world. If you see suffering, do something about it. If you see hunger, do something about it. If you see homelessness, do something about it. True faith is always accompanied by action. Make It a Great Day, Jim

AmeriCorps positions available at affiliate

The AmeriCorps program is funded by The Corporation for National and Community Service. CNCS is a federal agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation. The goal of the program is to help organizations operate more efficiently and effectively by maximizing existing volunteers, increasing capacity for new volunteers and most importantly, meeting the housing needs of communities by building more houses with low-income families. If you or someone you know would be interested in working in our construction department as an AmeriCorps volunteer, please call our office at 574-288-6967 for more details.

Grant spotlight: Affordable Housing Program
| The Affordable Housing Program (AHP) is one of the most flexible funding sources available for housing projects. The goal of the AHP is to provide housing opportunities for families whose incomes are 80% or less of the area median. Since 1990, the FHLBI has awarded more than $152 million for single- and multi-family housing initiatives, with 10% of net earnings allocated for the program each year. The program helps fund the acquisition, construction, or rehabilitation of properties for use as affordable housing.
Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County has been able to procure these funds since 1993 to subsidize an average of eight homes per build season at about $10,000 per home. This is a tremendous help to our affiliate and enables us to keep building a growing number of homes in our community.
Our most recent FHLBI member bank has been 1st Source Bank, and our contact person has been Dave Wood who has served as Vice-President and Community Reinvestment Officer. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his kind support and to congratulate him as he takes on the duties as the mayor of Mishawaka. Good luck, Dave!
