August 2010
Issue 15
From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Because of your continued support, the first half of the 2010 build season has been a huge success. The Notre Dame Student house and the Triumph (Sunnyside Presbyterian) house on Campeau have been completed and the families have moved in. The ReStore house and the Rock the House student house have been completed on Division Street in Mishawaka. The Matthew 25 house is almost finished, and World Build and Women Build are well underway. We will finish out the season with a Community Build in South Bend and the start of another ND Student Build.

If you drive by 2411 S. Main Street in South Bend, you will see that the construction of our new ReStore is well underway, and even the parking lot is getting a make-over. With a deadline of October 1, crews are working hard to transform the old building into a simple but beautiful retail establishment that will help fund the mission of Habitat in St. Joseph County for many years to come.

Finally, two more families have paid off their mortgages this year. Can you imagine how good it feels to not have a house payment? You helped make it happen.

Make It a Good Day,

Jim

Home Depot awards building initiative grant

Home DepotThe Home Depot Partners in Sustainable Building (PSB) program is a nationwide building initiative through Habitat International and Home Depot Foundation. This program gives Habitat affiliates additional resources and training needed to build homes that are energy-efficient, healthy to live in and affordable for the families to maintain long term. Building a home that meets green building standards, such as Energy Star, EarthCraft, LEED and others, can save a family on their energy bills and has less of an impact on the environment.

Recently, our affiliate was awarded this grant and will be able to draw $3,000 per home built to Energy Star standards (every new home built) this season. This is a two-year incentive program and will bring extra support to our efforts to build "green."

Our affiliate is always on the look-out for similar grant opportunities that fit the mission of Habitat, and our Grant Administrator, Elena Flynn, would welcome any suggestions or ideas about new grants. Feel free to contact her at the affiliate office.
Help Habitat save an essential funding program

HFHI's Government Relations and Advocacy Office (GRA) needs your help today to save the SHOP program! Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) offered an amendment (#106) on the House floor that would eliminate funding for the SHOP program, Habitat's most important annual federal funding stream. You can help by calling your House representative immediately and urging that s/he oppose the Peters/Adler/Himes/Welch amendment #106 to the FY 2011 Transportation-HUD Appropriations Act (HR 5850).

1. Go to www.house.gov and enter your zip code to identify your representative.
2. Find your representative's homepage on the house.gov site to find the number of the Washington office.
3. Call your representative's Washington office and ask to speak to the legislative assistant (LA) who handles housing issues.
4. When you reach the LA (or voicemail), request that the representative oppose the Peters/Adler/Himes/Welch amendment #106 to the FY 2011 Transportation-HUD Appropriations Act (HR 5850).
