July 2010
Issue 14
From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

This week we turned in an application for the Leighton Award for Nonprofit Excellence, a $100,000 matching grant sponsored by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. The process of explaining the impact of Habitat on our community and quantifying the results of our efforts was tedious, but very inspiring. Here are a few examples:

· Since 1987, we have put 130 hard-working, low-income families in houses.
· Since 2005, our affiliate has pumped $2.5 million back into our local economy just through the purchase of materials and services to build our houses
· Last year alone, our partner families paid $38,000 in property taxes.
· Since 2005, our ReStores have diverted 10,000 gallons of paint, 169 tons of scrap metal and 2,403 tons of merchandise from area landfills.
· In the last year, we have used $120,000 of ReStore profits to build more houses. By 2012, we hope to fund five houses per year through ReStore profits.

Thank you again for your support. Our best years are ahead of us.

Happy 4th of July!

Jim
Join us for our July house blessings!

We will celebrate the completion of three homes during the month of July!

On Sunday, July 11, we will bless the home of Jeremy Njoroge and Miriam Kimani, who were partnered with the Triumph (Sunnyside Presbyterian Church) Build at 1435 Campeau Street.

On Sunday, July 18, we will celebrate with Lisa Ullery and her son, Damon, (1602 N. Division - Rock the House Build) and the Abdelaziz family (1608 N. Division - ReStore Build) at a dual house blessing on site in Mishawaka.

Please join us for these celebrations, which take place at 3 p.m.
More NAP tax credits now available

After an overwhelming response to our request for donations through the NAP Tax Credit Program in June, we ran out of these tax credits. The good news is that our organization just received notification that it was awarded $44,000 of these tax credits for the period of July 1, 2010 - June 10, 2011.

We have NAP tax credits available through June 10, 2011, but if you would like the credits for the year 2010, now is the time to donate. If you would like to receive an NC-10 form to fill out (required to be sent with your donation), or if you would like more information, please contact Elena at the affiliate office.

Thank you to all our donors who are so generous in supporting the work of Habitat here in St. Joseph County.
Donations needed for Partner Family Potluck

The annual Partner Family Potluck is coming up on July 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Potawatomi Park pavilion. We are in need of donations for prizes. If you have anything you would like to donate (gift certificates, household items, toys), please contact Jenna (Froberg) Jones at the Habitat office.
Ask your senator to pass the Haiti aid bill

Right now, Congress is considering a key spending bill to support relief and reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Millions of people in Haiti could use that aid to begin rebuilding their homes and their lives. Habitat for Humanity has made an unprecedented commitment to the people of Haiti - we will serve 50,000 families. Millions of dollars in U.S. aid have been set aside to serve their true goal: rebuilding communities and reuniting families. Ask your senators to pass the Haiti aid bill.
