Partner family expresses gratitude

We received the following note from a partner family over the holiday season:

"I want to thank everyone at Habitat. For the first time in four years, we are able to have a tree and Christmas decorations. Our home is the best gift of all this year."
Unexpected $27,500 gift from foundation

On Dec. 29, 2009, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County received an unexpected donation of $27,500 from the Roger I. and Ruth B. MacFarlane Foundation in Palos Verdes Estates, California.
Three words added to mission statement

Since our inception in 1987, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County has provided homes for 128 families and desires to build 34 more homes from 2010-2012. Our mission has always been "to build simple, decent, affordable homes;" but as we move forward, we are adding three words to our mission statement: "with lasting value." This will affect the design of our homes, the materials we use, and the location of our builds.
New Habitat license plates now available

License plateHabitat Indiana's special license plate recently underwent a makeover when the State of Indiana asked that all special plates follow standardized guidelines for layout to increase the ease of production.

The new plates are available as of January 1, 2010. The plates cost forty dollars and will help to fund the local Habitat affiliate for which they are purchased.

Please contact your local DMV for more information on purchasing your Habitat license plate.
Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative

In recent years, some affiliates have broadened their efforts and moved from doing strictly new construction to also including rehabilitation and repair of rundown homes. According to Habitat for Humanity International, now is the time for affiliates to diversify the housing solutions they can provide to a community. Those interventions can range from major projects, such as new construction and vacant house rehabilitation, to smaller efforts such as home repairs and weatherization. In fiscal year 2008, the housing interventions reported by U.S. affiliates broke down as follows: new construction (81 percent), rehabilitation (10 percent) and repairs (9 percent).
