President's Message

Get Involved!

John VanKirk
In a few of my prior messages I have expressed my optimism for the future of our Nation's manufacturing industry,  although I do not want to imply that we can continue to operate as we have in the past.  Manufacturing operations must continually change and adapt to the challenges of today and tomorrow.  Those who embrace change and drive improvements to productivity will be, for the most part, in control of their future.  However, there is another "small" entity that has significant influence in our success, the federal government.

Technology Spotlight

Precision Capacitive and Eddy-Current Displacement Sensors

The continuous evolution of manufacturing technology and processes, coupled with ever-tightening mechanical tolerances, has made the once tiny micron (µm) now appear to be a rather large unit of measure. Devices for measuring parts, controlling processes, and testing manufacturing tools to these shrinking tolerances have become more and more critical even as these demands reduce the number of viable measurement options. Some noncontact displacement sensors based on capacitive and eddy-current technology are breaking through these limits and providing measurements with nanometer resolutions.
Tech Tip

Driving Down Manufacturing Design Costs

How many times have you heard, "Just because you can draw it doesn't mean I can make it?"  With the increased power and capability of current CAD software, designers are able to create new features and design combinations easier than ever before.  This is often done without appropriate consideration to manufacturability.
