Technology Spotlight

Low Volume Manufacturing with Fused Deposition Modeling Technology

Direct digital manufacturing (DDM) is a breakthrough technology that could revolutionize the way in which low volume and difficult-to-locate replacement parts are manufactured and supplied to the military now and in the future. DDM matured from the rapid prototyping industry, where 3D computer aided design (CAD) data are used to produce thermoplastic products using a computer-controlled, additive manufacturing process.

A number of technologies are available for rapid prototyping, but the one developed and commercialized by NCDMM Alliance Partner, Stratasys, called fused deposition modeling (FDM), is capable of building products from several different thermoplastic materials, with different strengths and temperature properties.
