The Critical Need for a Sustainable Manufacturing Base
With the present political and media barrage of "Green Economy, carbon footprints, Sustainable and Green, etc.," there can be confusion and in some cases skepticism to the true significance or personal/business relevance to these trends. To try and gain a more comprehensive understanding of complex concepts like these I always need to get to the root of any issue, topic, or even for that matter, a phrase or word. It probably stems from my early upbringing when I would ask my parents a question and I would get the inevitable, "Look it up."

Technology Spotlight
Green and Sustainable Manufacturing Research
The Laboratory for Manufacturing and Sustainability (LMAS) - UC Berkeley, an NCDMM Alliance Partner, has a mission to create sustainable technologies to innovate manufacturing products, processes and systems. The focus is manufacturing and all its elements - from material extraction through processing, production including distribution and, eventually, take back and recycling/reuse.

Tech Tip
Attempting thin-wall machining can be very tricky especially milling part features with the equivalent thickness of sheet metal or even thinner (for this discussion, 0.02" - 0.100"). Although thin walls can prove to be problematic, with a little know-how of proper techniques you will be able to machine these features effectively and efficiently.
