Fi
Greetings!

One area of confusion for most folks is how to prepare photos and graphic files for the best results, based on the media of choice. Decisions that have to be made include:

  • What color format should I use (RGB or CMYK)?
  • What about resolution, DPI, PPI, MP?
  • Which file type works best for my purposes (JPG, TIF, EPS, PNG, GIF)?
  • What is the difference between a Vector file and a Bitmap file? Which one do I use and why?

My goal, without being overly technical, is to help answer some of these questions in order to prevent the frustration you could experience when your files are rejected by your printer or designer; or when you get unexpected results when uploading to online media. This week's newsletter concentrates on the use of color space.

Preparing Your Files for Best Results I:

Use of Color RGB vs. CMYK

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is the color format used for computer monitors, cameras, and TVs. These three colors, blended using light,  create some 16.8 million colors that electronic devices are capable of displaying. That is only a portion of the spectrum of colors the human eye can see.

Keep in mind, that all devices represent the color a little color wheeldifferently, so the colors on your computer monitor may look a little different on my computer monitor.

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) color space is used for commercial printing, where colors are produced with the use of ink pigments. However, the CMYK gamut is smaller, meaning fewer colors can be reproduced using pigments. Photos shot in RGB can be converted to CMYK format in image editing programs such as Photoshop. Since CMYK colors cannot be exactly matched to the original RGB colors it can be a little tricky and may require some tweeking to get the best possible result.

BOTTOM-LINE: Use RGB color format when preparing files for your web site, email, e-newsletter, blog, or other electronic media; and use CMYK colors for files that are to be commercially printed.

Watch for related articles in the coming weeks. If you have any questions regarding file preparation, please call or email and I will do my best to guide you.
