11th Year

The 2011 cover for the Handmade Tile Association (HTA) directory was voted on and it was another close election. tile column Each year we receive three cover choices from the Tile Heritage Foundation (THF) for members to vote on.  This process is part of a trade of services with the THF and the HTA.  It allows the HTA to have a cover with cool historic tiles showcasing our past tile history and linking the past with the present of all the contemporary tile artists and resources.

Here is the history of this years choice.

Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church is located at 315 East Ninth Street in Erie, Pennsylvania. Built in 1854 the church was thoroughly remodeled in 1933 when the new terra-cotta fašade, dramatically decorated with an eclectic assortment of iconic elements in a variety of bright colors, transformed the appearance of the building. The distinctively attractive cladding is presumed to have been produced by the O.W. Ketchham Terra Cotta Works of Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania, a company known for its artistic modeling in combination with the unusual use of colored glazes.

52 pages for 2011

The 2011 directory has expanded again reaching 52 pages up four pages from 2010. One of the achievements we reached this year is receiving five articles on a wide scope of topics. This a major goal for the directory to be able to have interested parties write about tile history, creating with tiles, raw materials and designing with tiles.  We want to engage our readership with a holistic view of the handmade tile world. Our main audience are people who are looking to purchase tiles for their home and businesses. The HTA believes story telling is the one way we can connect and educate our readership and help them become engaged lifelong patrons and supporters of handmade tile and mosaics.

We have 43 artists who took out ads for 2011 and 36 resource advertisers. This is the same amount of tile artists as last year but we have eleven new artists and advertisers from NC,OR,MN, WI, WA, CO, CA and VA.

The HTA did a variety of trades with other organizations too. Midwest Art Fairs, The Potters Council, Do it Green Magazine, Melissa Copon Photography, Tile Heritage Foundation and the Artisan Tile Northwest group.  Trades allow both participants to engage each others services and collaborate.

Also we saw a growth in more designers, tile showrooms and organizations.  All of these are very important for the wholistic reach of the directory. The goal is so when the public picks up the directory or receives one through the mail there are local resources they can utilize beyond tile artists.

Old House Media group logoWe were able to secure a variety of sponsors for 2011.  Our Structure Sponsor  Old House Media Group which produces three magazines Old House Interiors, Arts & Crafts Homes and Old House Journal will give us a larger national presence. The HTA had already been doing advertising in their magazines and they had listed the MN Tile Festival many times before. We have been seeing positive results from our advertising and when Josh Blanc and Lisa Trnka had met Carol a reps for Old House Medial Group at the Twin Cities Arts and Crafts show this past fall Carol told us about their sponsorship programs for small organizations.

The Minnesota Tile Festival has three sponsors for 2011 The American Swedish Institute, Mpls/St.Paul Magazine and Trebuchet.  All of these sponsors are aimed at drawing more attention to the event itself and to targeted demographics.  The HTA is very pleased to have more parties working with us and help grow this dynamic show.

Thanks for every ones dedication and hard work to the Handmade Tile Association directory. We are looking forward to another great year.
