Handmade Tile Association Newsletter

April 2008

Greetings!

In the past couple of months I have had many conversations with member artists who have told me that they have positive responses from advertising in the directory.  Many artists have created relationships with new galleries, others with showrooms and some directly with the public.  This is very welcome news to hear that the directory is creating value for them.
Every year the directory artists have been crafting their message about the type of artist they are as well as the audience they are trying to court.  This is an important development that each artist and advertiser continues to understand how people view their work through print advertising. Keep asking people how they found you and try to discover what it is that drew them to your work.
Some of the success is due to the HTA's expanding mailing list.  Since the beginning of the HTA we have been collecting addresses of galleries, showrooms, designers, and architects around the country to make sure they get the directory on an annual basis.  You can help this concept by collecting business cards of these types of businesses and submit them to the HTA.  This ensures they see your ad in the directory every year as well as invitations to the MN Tile Festival.
Our success as an organization is based on the simple concept that  we are all in this together and the more we understand that helping someone else succeed is helping ourselves succeed. If you have a story of  connecting with a client please send it to the HTA.  Thanks and keep up the good work.

Applying for a group show

Leann Johson of Lea-Way Designs sent out a call for artist members to submit images for a proposal to the Bloomington Art Center gallery show in 2010.  Leann got 14 people to submit images.  Leann drafted the proposal to have a group HTA show to showcase the HTA artists diverse styles and promote the use of tile and mosaic through out the region.
Leann had to put this all together in a little over a week to make the deadline.  We will hear back in the next couple of months if we will be invited to have this show.  If we get a show all HTA artist members will be able to submit work to the show.  Thanks to Leann for putting this together on behalf of the HTA membership.

We need your opinion
We are planning the 10th anniversary party for the directory.  This is a major milestone for any orgnaization but we need input from our membership.  This is our community and if we do not talk about our accomplishments and our milestones then we can't  expect others to. Please think about and consider how we can can celebrate this milestone and what we should and can do to promote it.  If you can not make one of our meetings please e-mail any board member to give your input and if you can help.  Show your HTA pride!
U of M Medical School - Duluth Campus Seeks Artists

The University of Minnesota Medical School-Duluth Campus is seeking artists interested in creating a Wall of Honor in its building's atrium at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.  This campus of the medical school plans to honor organizations and people who have made significant contributions to our school in the form of gifts that support programs, endowed chairs and professorships, scholarships and research.  The final list of honorees will include founders, other individuals, corporations and foundations. Many colleges and universities have Walls of Honor that simply list of names and categories on plaques. We believe that our donors and the community of Duluth deserve recognition that extends beyond a plaque. We would like to commission and erect a work of art that will be mounted on a wall within our medical school atrium where it will be visible and where we often host medical school events.  We want it to inspire our students and the public as well as thank our generous donors.

View this information and the PDF of the RFQ on this web page http://www.med.umn.edu/duluth/giving/wallofhonor.html.  For more information about this campus of the University of Minnesota Medical school go to www.med.umn.edu/duluth
