CREDIT CARD SAFETY TIPS August 2009
 Credit card
For most consumers, Credit Cards have become a normal part of their daily financial transactions.  Other than using cash, many transactions such as car rentals, airline reservations, and hotel accommodations require the use of a credit card to secure the purchase.

The volume of purchases made with credit cards rises each day along with that, the possibility of fraud increases.  There are, however, many safety tips that a credit card user can practice as a means of preventing fraudulent activities.

CARD TIPS
  • Never lend your card to anyone.
  • Never sign a blank charge slip.  Draw lines through blank spaces on the slip to prevent altering.
  • Be cautious about disclosing your account number over the phone or online unless you know the source well.
  • Destroy old or cancelled credit cards by demagnetizing the back stripe with a magnet, cut in pieces with scissors and dispose in separate waste containers.  Best method is shredding the card with a cross cutting shredder.
TRAVEL TIPS

  • Keep a separate listing of your credit card account numbers and phone numbers to report any issues.
  • Carry only the cards you expect to use and store other cards in a secure location.
  • *If notified in advance of any unusual purchases or travel plans, your credit card company may monitor your account to avoid purchases from being rejected due to suspected fraud.

*FNBT.COM encourages its clients to email the bank in advance so we may provide the best service possible.

PAYMENT TIPS

  • When remitting a  credit card payment or ordering merchandise by mail, do not write your card number on outside of envelope or visible order form.
  • Keep your purchase receipts to compare to your credit card statement.
  • Use online services provided by your credit card company to make payments and view account activity online.
REFUND AND DISPUTE TIPS

  • If you find a mistake on your credit card bill or after viewing your credit card transactions online, report your concerns to your credit card company promptly to avoid missing dispute deadlines.
  • Provide your credit card company with a detailed description of the error in question.
  • To minimize credit card liability keep track of all your credit cards and activity, and notify your credit card company as quickly as possible of any concerns.
