The Treasury has developed a very informative web site, Treasury Direct logo, where you can purchase, redeem, and register your savings bonds.  The site also provides current rate information and redemption values.

EE/E

EE/E Savings Bonds
are a secure savings product that pays interest based on current market rates for up to 30 years.  
 
Electronic EE Bonds are sold at face value in amounts starting as low as $25. 
 
Annual purchases cannot exceed $5,000
.
 
Issued electronically to  designated account.
 
Paper EE Bonds
are sold at half their face value in denominations ranging from $50 up to $5,000. and reach their face value at maturity.
 
Annual purchases cannot exceed $5,000.
 
Issued as paper bond certificates for owners to maintain.
 
EE/E Bonds redeemed within the first 5 years carry of penalty of the 3 most-recent months' interest.
 
EE/E Bonds redeemed after 5 years, carry no penalty.

"I" Savings Bonds are a low-risk savings product that earns interest while providing protection from inflation.
 
Electronic "I" Bonds
are sold at face value in amount of $25 or more.
 
Annual purchases cannot exceed $5,000.
 
Issued electronically to designated account.
 
Paper "I" Bonds
sold at face value in denominations ranging from $50 up to $5000.
 
Annual purchases cannot exceed $5,000.
 
Issued as paper bond certificates for owners to maintain.
 
"I" Bonds redeemed within the first 5 years, carry a penalty of the 3 most recent months' interest.
 
"I" Bonds redeemed after 5 years, carry no penalty. 
 
 
HH/H
Savings
Bonds
 
 
HH/H Savings Bonds
 
Investors were no longer able to reinvest HH/H bonds or exchange EE/E bonds for HH bonds as of September 1, 2004.
 
  
Unlike EE bonds, HH bonds are current-income securities.
 
 
HH bonds were purchased at face value and investors receive interest payments by direct deposit every
6 months until maturity or redemption.
 
 
HH Bonds carried an interest-earning period of 20 years after which time interest is not longer earned or paid.
