New Church Home - God is Good!

By Clancy Nixon

God is good - all the time.  What an amazing God we serve!  With the Virgin Mary in the Magnificat, we can shout, "He who is mighty has done great things for me."  (Luke 1:49) In just six weeks, we have received cash and pledges for most of what we need to pay for the build-out of our new church home - almost $200,000!  Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.

This has stretched the faith of all of us.  I've heard that one person said, "I really didn't think that our little church could DO that!"  Some may have doubted; but all of us knew that our God COULD do it!  He has provided in a marvelous way.

secondstoryHelping Haiti - Face to Face

haitian boy

Church of the Holy Spirit is praying for and actively assisting the people and nation of Haiti. Many of our efforts and contributions are focused on people helping people face to face in that desperate nation. Tom Pokorni, who led a ministry to the Haitian children in south Florida and Haiti for 20 years, left the 25th of January to go to Miami. From there he headed to the island to help the children who had been left injured and orphaned.

Another group from CHS, led by Deacon John Nuzum, will go on a mission trip to the Lacroix New Testament Mission about 70 miles north of the capitol. There, they will help Pastor Vaugelas Pierre feed and educate the thousands of Haitian children who attend his pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school. This trip has been planned since November. To learn more about our efforts to help Hait, please click here to go to the Help Haiti page on our website.
thirdstoryThank You from the Front Lines

We got a letter from a service woman based in Basrah who received one of the gift boxes and letters of encouragement CHS sent over the holidays. Here is her letter:

Dear Church of the Holy Spirit,

Thank you so much for all the letters and goodies that were sent. We really do appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. It's good to know that we are not unappreciated, especially during the holidays when we cannot be with the ones we love. We are separating all the goodies so that everyone can have something. I haven't really been active in a church for quite some time, and to receive a care box from one really lifted my spirits. I know that a lot of people don't agree with the wars, but should also take into consideration that this is our job, our day to day lifestyle. We joined the military to protect the ones we love and everyone else in this great country. We don't ask for much here, but only to have us in your prayers and hope for the safe return of each and every Soldier, Marine, Sailor and Airman. Thank you once again.

Sincerely,
Sgt. _ of 256th Sig Co, Camp Basrah.

This Guess Who? is a local, born in Georgetown and raised in Bowie, Md. His dad worked in DC for the US Department of Education and mom was a nurse.  Our Guess Who? was a bit hyper as a boy and his teacher would sometimes have to tie him to his chair in school! He met his wife to be while they were still in high school and worked as a radio DJ in college. A bright boy, he earned degrees in music and physics and has a Masters in engineering from Johns Hopkins. During the hippy years, he would also answer to the nickname "Buffalo". Now he's quite respectable, successful, still married to the same young lady he met in high school, has a "full quiver" of children and still cheers for the Redskins. Guess Who?

From October - This Guess Who? grew up in a large family, played basketball in college and roots for Notre Dame's "Fighting Irish". Known to many simply as "Boss" this mystery person at one point was a burger flipper for none other than MacDonalds fine restaurants.  The preferred way to spend time for this CHS member is under water - with a scuba tank and gear that is - but when not in the deep blue sea might be spotted eating favorite foods like catsup (catsup?), jordan almonds, and Godiva marzipan (not together at least).

Chris is in active ministry outside the walls of the church as a gifted evangelist and powerful witness in her workplace. She is also involved in many aspects of our church including setup and breakdown, altar ministry, helping in worship, and Vacation Bible School.

"The principles I learned changed my life and how I handle money forever. After 12 years of marriage, my wife and I are truly on the same page about finances."

These are just a few of the many testimonials from people who have taken Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. CHS is hosting the 13 lesson course this winter and spring at Elijah Gate Christian Center in Leesburg on Friday nights from 6:30pm to 9:00. Paul Tobias, a graduate of the course, is leading.  The course is full - actually overflowing! - with people from inside and outside of CHS (youth to retirement-age) who want to receive God's peace with their finances.

After 8 years meeting in a school gym on Sundays, we are very close to signing a 7.5 year lease at a great rate for about 11,000 square feet of excellent 24/7 space at 908 Trailview fronting on Rt. 7 in Leesburg.  The lawyers are now negotiating final language for the lease. We'll have a congregational vote to approve the lease on the Sunday following that finalization - we'll let you know the date when we know it.  It's so close you can taste it!

Two Vestry members, Chuck Henry and Ronda Royalty, are heading the new Vestry committee that is overseeing the decision-making processes associated with build-out.  Please pray for them and for everyone who will be involved in this process - for wisdom, discernment, and unity.  You may contact them with your suggestions, questions, and offers to help.  One of the Landlord's requirements is that their employees and sub-contractors will do all the build-out according to our specifications.  Unfortunately, we won't be able to participate in swinging hammers and wielding paintbrushes.  The estimate for our move-in date is now May or June.

Thank you, one and all, to all who gave and will give to make this dream a reality.  Your gifts of love, time, service, prayer, money, and support have all been essential for us to take this next step.  God has used you to do mighty things indeed!

God is good - all the time.+
