Greetings!
Summer has arrived and so did the heat, graduations, and the end of school - a couple of days early! Hopefully you made plans for your summer vacation! I am gearing up for a week at the beach, but your email continue in my absence. Ms. Erin Thompson will help while I am gone as she learns formatting and electonic publishing. She is a sophmore at GMU, LIFE program and has a big dream! She would like to have her own magazine someday and this will be a great start to learn new skills. This summer The Arc and self-advocates are launching the "I have a dream, I have a Life, I have a Name" campaign. Jill Egle, co-executive director, reports that this an important move in our efforts because after her year in a leadership role she sees our advocacy efforts as a civil movement rather than funding-issues, and that a person with a disability has the very same dreams as everyone else but without the right supports they cannot live "A Life LIke Yours".
We hope you saw our new card in the mail last week. I explains this new campaign and we hope you will make a doantion to help us in our efforts. If you did not recieve one, drop me an email with your address and I can have one mailed out. Please remember to give us your new address when you move. We have received many returned cards and want to make sure our data is up-to-date when we mail next time.

LEAP Awards still available! Making the LEAP to Adulthood
The Arc of Northern Virginia and The HSC Foundation, in partnership, are proud to announce the: 2008 Life Enrichment Awards Program (LEAP) ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS The purpose of the Life Enrichment Awards Program (LEAP) is to enrich the lives of youth and young adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses and at-risk youth in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. For example, the program does not generally fund food, clothing (except business clothes needed for school or job interviews), medicine, direct medical service, or housing. Legal residents of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, up to Baltimore, MD and down to Richmond, VA will be eligible to receive program awards. Eligibility To be eligible for this program, the awardee must be between the ages of 14 and 25 with one of the following: Intellectual Disability Hearing impairments (including deafness) Speech or language impairments Visual impairments (including blindness) Serious emotional disturbance Orthopedic impairments Autism Traumatic brain injury Other health-experiencing developmental delays, as measured by appropriate diagnostic instruments and procedures, in one or more of the following areas: physical development, cognitive development, communication development, social or emotional development, or adaptive development; and who, by reason thereof, needs special education and/or health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally, or Demonstration of at-risk behavior. Additionally, the awardee must be actively engaged in a transition process and their requested good or service must be directly linked to transition planning and implementation, such as youth development services, tools for transition, and support services.
