NATIONAL COUNCIL ON INDEPENDENT LIVING INFORMATION ALERT The new Competitive Bidding Program will be implemented in 10 major cities starting July 1. The bottom line is that there will be a drastic cut in providers, which will hinder access and service to people who use durable medical equipment (DME) such as power wheelchairs. CMS will be implementing new payments for DME, making quality name brand products less available or unavailable. You can read the background at the http://www.unitedspinal.org/advocacy/medicare-competitive-bidding-may-affect-your-wheelchair/

| Three Generations of Imbeciles
by Rick Hodges Jun 27 & 28
Actors with real disabilities will portray characters caught up in the eugenics movement in Virginia, when hundreds of people with intellectual disabilities were sterilized against their will, in the Barcroft Player's production of Three Generations of Imbeciles on June 27 and 28. The title comes from the actual Supreme Court case that upheld the sterilizations, but the characters defy the future that others set for them. Three Generations of Imbeciles exposes a disturbing secret in Virginia's history-one that set a precedent for the whole country-and celebrates the power of those who refuse to accept limits set in the minds of others. The play opens with the horror of a forced sterilization, but the young victim finds another way to have a family in a triumph over the forces of doubt set against her. But when her adopted daughter, who has Down syndrome, wants a child of her own, she must confront the doctor who sterilized her-and prove her fitness to be a mother all over again. The two characters with intellectual disabilities will be played by real actors with intellectual disabilities. The play will run June 27 and 28 at 7:30 pm at the Barcroft Community House, 800 South Buchanan Street in Arlington (wheelchair accessible). Tickets are 8$ at the door, no advance tickets sold. The play is not suitable for children under 12. For more information click here or email Rick Hodges at threegenplay@verizon.net.

| Take Action
It's not too late to be heard!
Deadline June 30th.
All students, family members and other concerned citizens are strongly encouraged to share your concerns about the revised Special Education Regulations with your Delegate and Senator.
The Arc has been hearing that some members of the General Assembly (from both sides of the aisle) have either contacted DOE directly or have spoken at the public hearings. This is great news and we are asking advocates across the state to help build on these efforts by inviting your Delegate and Senator to be part of this movement as well! TAKE ACTION today by using The Arc of Virginia's Action Center to send your legislator an email requesting his/her help in protecting the rights of children with disabilities in Virginia's schools. Please add a personal note about how these regulations could impact (or would have impacted) you or someone you care about. Click on the blue Take Action link to compose your letter now.
Thanks for your advocacy on behalf of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities! Your efforts are making a difference!
