Greetings!

Welcome to the Factor10 March edition of "Martial Arts and You".

At Factor10 we know it's important to make sure we offer a special martial arts experience for everyone.  Of course our classes are great, and we know we're an industry leader when it comes to exciting and innovative classes.

More than that, we love going an extra step and offering something special that other martial arts clubs don't.  Our "Super Skills" seminars are a free seminar that give members an extra chance out of regular classes to brush up on their grading preparation skills.  These seminars are free and I recommend members make good use of them.  They are scheduled on Sat 17 March and May 19.

On the social front, we won't be beaten either when it comes to helping mums and dads feel that bit extra special.  It's your night out with our "Parent's Night Out" movie and pizza night on Sat May 26 from 6 to 8:30pm so make sure that's in your diary.

For those who just can't get enough of the martial arts (like me), then throw yourself at our Factor10 "Fun Factor" seminars on Sat 7 April when we'll study "Mok-kum" (traditional wooden sword) and on Sat May 19 when it's Nunchaku time studying "Ee Chul Bong".

And the next tournament I hear you asking about?  Well the "Hanmadang" technical tournament is on Sat 21 April and is a must for all members.  Kids, adults and teenagers who do technical tournaments are always more advanced in their martial arts development than those who do not.

The next school holidays are just around the corner, so we have not forgotten you when it comes to the school holidays, with the Factor10 Pupil Free Day holiday martial arts program on Tue 10 April from 9am to 3pm - loads of fun!

Whether you're a current Factor10 member or thinking about embarking on a great Martial Arts journey, enroll in one of our "Fun Factor" seminars and see how we do it at Factor10 - I promise you will not be disappointed.

Sincerely

Karate vs Taekwondo - Which one to choose

The two most common martial arts being practiced in Australia are Taekwondo and Karate.
karate vs taekwondo
Karate uniform (left)
Taekwondo Uniform (right)

Ever since people have been interested in doing martial arts they have been wondering what is the difference between the two. This poses a problem especially for those who are just looking around for a martial art school or studio.

The fact that both Karate and Taekwondo seem to be wearing the same style of uniforms with different belt colors does not help either.

Modern traditional Karate was developed in the islands of Okinawa in Japan after some influences from Chinese martial arts.

In fact, there are different styles of Karate but they are all commonly considered as Japanese martial arts today. The colored belt system was developed to show the different ranks of Karate practitioners.

With white belt depicting novices and black belts representing instructor levels and higher, there is a whole range of other different colors in between.

Modern Taekwondo was developed in Korea after much influence from Japanese Karate during the occupation by Japan. Sometimes, Taekwondo is referred to as Korean karate.

The Koreans adopted the same white uniforms along with a colored belt ranking system for Taekwondo.  Today, there are two major styles of Taekwondo, one under the International Taekwondo Federation and the other under the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)

Pupil Free Day Holiday Martial Arts Program Tuesday 10 April 2012

This is a 9am to 3pm program on Tuesday April 10 for all ages and belt level students to attend. This day is a pupil free day at school and can be a great day for children to develop further for their grading skills.

The classes are an exciting program to help focus children, get back into routine and focussing on excellence as these are some of the three things a great martial artist needs to be focussed on.

Although this program still isn't for another two months its time to start thinking about it as it will sneak up on everyone very quickly.

Registration forms will be available soon. Please pop this in your diary now.

Member Testimonials

Mitchell started with your academy in October 2007, originally to build up his confidence.  His confidence is not the only thing that this has helped him with.  He is a different boy.  He is confident, respectful, well mannered, very thoughtful and super energetic.  My husband, Michael and I are so so proud of him and the super boy he has become.

Michael doesn't get to watch Mitchell and Jarrod as much as he would like to, but he came to watch Mitchell's 1st gup grading and was absolutly blown away.  He was so impressed with Mitchell's knowledge and abilty.  He was bragging about Mitchell at work all night...
