Greetings!

Welcome to the Factor10 January edition of "Martial Arts and You".
Damien Photo 080910
2012 has started smoothly with members returning to class on 9 January.  Congratulations for showing true martial art spirit persevering through those really hot days we experienced in the first few days back.

I am away this week in Tasmania participating in a one week National Poomse training camp at Port Sorrell.  This is a great opportunity for our club to get the latest World Taekwondo Federation developments in Poomse and the teaching of Poomse - I feel very privileged to be part of this and to be able to bring back to Factor10 the latest technical and coaching methods in the teaching this wonderful Martial Art.

I am writing this from Tasmania and have been working hard in 4 training sessions each day with other Masters and high ranking Australian black belts.  We do training before breakfast, before lunch, after lunch and then again after dinner in the evening, finishing around 9.00pm.  Each session runs for about 2 hours and everything we are doing is practical, meaning hard training.  So if there is anyone out there who is good at remedial massage, Master O will be needing one on his return!

I hope your training to start the year has been as invigorating for you.  Like with anything we do in life, it all about the focus and attention that we give anything that delivers the greatest results.

Please sit back and enjoy our newsletter.  Stay happy and healthy!

Sincerely

Master Damien O'Flaherty

Taekwondo is Not Taekwondo Without Its Kicks

You have probably heard this over and over again but you are going to hear it again now Taekwondo is known for its kicks.

The kicks used in Taekwondo sparring are more striking than in any other martial art. Even though the kicks in poomse are simpler than the ones used in sparring, they can be equally as impressive if executed properly.

Also, a good, solid front kick is more impressive than an impromptu tornado or double roundhouse kick.
What is it that makes a great Taekwondo kick?

1. Balance
Balance may not be seem as obvious as you think. And balance is more than just not ending up on the floor. It is a matter of fluidity, of gracefulness, of naturalness.

With a properly balanced kick, the supporting foot does not wobble, the hands do not flail about, and the athlete does not rush to complete the kick.

Also, the athlete begins and ends the technique in the proper stances without having to correct the stances to accommodate the kick.

Practice moving within your stances. When you feel comfortable doing simple things within your stances, you should try to kick from one stance into another.

2. Proper form
Having proper form is a requirement to having a beautiful kick. Proper form may be defined as the correct positions to which the entire body enters as it performs a kick from start to finish.

It is wise to talk with your instructor or other certified professional martial artist to learn the more articulate details of proper form. They will have the answers to any questions that you may have.

Member Testimonials

Hi Damien, I'll  share with you what Ethan told me in the car on the way to training yesterday. "I don't believe that I got my first pre grade stipe on the first day".  And at the end of training yesterday, he received yet another stripe.  Ethan is one very happy, stoked boy, who is loving his lessons. He also said yesterday that he wanted to stay there until he gets his black belt, then become a trainer. Will wait to see what happens. He seems very focused.  Thank you very much for everything.
