Greetings!

Welcome to the Factor10 September edition of "Martial Arts and You".

You may have noticed on our calendar that August has been a very exciting month with so much happening.  Apart from the fun and festivities of the Pine Rivers and Ekka show holidays, the highlights of the month included the Yellow Jacket Tournament, a huge demo our Demo Team did at the Petrie Catholic school and Factor10 hosting the Oceania Taekwondo Union Poomse Judging seminar.

This coming month is no exception when it comes to action on the Martial Arts front.  I will be attending an International Referee Seminar on the Gold Coast for 4 days leading up to the Australian Open at Carrara on 17 and 18 September.  We have a few competitors including myself, Maddy Houston, Courtney West and Steph Hodges competing in Poomse at this event, with Matt Fien fighting in the open black belt division.  Aidan Butlin, Jordan Cushing and Dom Palleschi from our junior TID sparring program have also been invited to attend.

On Friday 16 September we see the start of the school Spring holidays when we will be running a Factor10 Holiday Martial Arts program on the pupil free day at the end of the holidays on Monday 17 September - this promises to be a great day.

Some other events looking ahead include

  1. Factor10 Holiday Martial Arts Program Mon 17 Sep
  2. Fun Factor Ground Grappling Seminar on Sat 1 Oct
  3. Halloween disco on Sat evening 29 Oct
  4. F10 "Hanmadang" Sat 12 Nov
  5. Grand Master Lee visits F10 Sat 26 Nov
And a new class is starting:
  • Poomse training class
  • To assist students wanting to improve their Poomse for grading or for those wishing to compete in Poomse
  • Taught by Maddy Houston - current Qld Poomse champion
  • Starts Thursday 15 September 2011
  • Goes from 3.45pm to 4.30pm every Thursday.  If there is sufficient interest we will continue to run the class as part of our regular timetable.
  • Please book in at reception to attend this class
It's also been so exciting for me to enjoy the technical excellence of our members who recently graded to black belt and others who did pre grades for black belt.  A big congratulations to Rory Wieland, Cai Butlin, Zec Streeter, Aidan Butlin, Mitchell Peters and Brentton Smith who achieved their black belt grades last Thursday evening.

Please sit back and enjoy our newsletter.  Stay happy and healthy!

Sincerely

Master Damien O'Flaherty

The Enigma Behind Taekwondo and Hapkido Uniforms
Black Belt Image

Not many people know that the principle behind Taekwondo and Hapkido is even followed in the construction of the training uniform or "dobok" as it is traditionally called.

It can be noted that many Eastern philosophic doctrines are the basis behind the principles of the ancient Korean arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido. In their concepts the harmony in human life is very important. They input the same ideas in the creation of their uniform.

The dobok is said to be taken from the national Korean costume.

The Last Hanmadang Delivers Excellence
The traditional Hanmadang - a technical festival of Korean Martial Arts - has at its core purpose to encourage, nurture and challenge the persuit of excellence in the many disciplines of the traditional Korean Martial Arts. The final published results of the Factor10 Martial Arts Technical Hanmadang held on Saturday 18 June are testament of what children, teenagers and adults can do when they apply themselves in an environment that that focusses on excellence. It's amazing to note some members were kicking above the height of 2.4metres, scoring over 10 points in the technical breaking and achieving scores of over 8 in traditional poomse.
