Factor10 Fly Around
Thursday 4 November 2010

Greetings!

It really excites me to be able to announce a great calendar of ongoing events every time I sit down to draft this fly around newsletter.

The weekend just gone had the fabulous "Halloween Dance" and I think absolutely everyone left feeling they had a great night.  Our resident DJ Kyle took the roof off with his great choice of music and the Smith family did an amazing job on the Halloween decorations.  Our older students showed great leadership on the night and the younger ones (and older ones) danced the night away.  What a hit .. we'll sure be doing it next year!

This weekend has the second seminar in the "Fun Factor" seminar series.  This seminar has been planned with a lot of very careful thought and following requests over the past 12 months to teach children, teenagers and adults how to defend themselves with a knife.  You may recall over the past 12 months there has been quite a lot in the media about young people being seriously injured and some killed from violent attacks with a knife.  I do not want to dwell on the macabre nature of this - other than to say it's up to every family to make sure they are prepared.  As you would know by now I do not accept the "It won't happen to me" kind of thinking and hope you do not either.

The weekend after this weekend on the 13th we have our exciting "Hanmadang" (Technical Tournament).  This presents another extraordinary opportunity for parents and members to develop and hone their Martial Arts skills through a fantastic traditional Martial Arts competition.  The comp has always had a wonderful festive atmosphere and this Hanmadang will be no different.

Well, all I can say is be part of the great development and enjoy the moment.

Last Tournament for 2010
Hanmadang Poster 121010The Factor10 "Hanmadang" Technical Tournament has always been an exciting experience for all students.  The more energy focused events include timber board breaking, fly side kick and high kick with the higher level technical events of Poomse and Self defence providing students an opportunity to reach that bit further.

Factor10 members are really encouraged to participate.  Mums and Dads always attend the tournament and watch their children do some incredible things, and parents often say they are surprised their children have advanced so far in their Martial Arts development.

Factor10 Thinking Skills                                               Your To-Do List

Throw Away Your To-Do List!
Do you ever feel like you've been very busy achieving not much at all? Flat-out going nowhere in particular? Like a bogged car desperately trying to escape the mud? Lots of wheel-spinning, noise, effort and smoke but no actual traction? No progress? No shift? Are there times when you feel like you've got fifty balls in the air and you're about to collapse in a heap? Do you ever arrive at the end of the week (month, year, decade), only to look back and say, "What did all that effort, energy and exhaustion produce?"

If you said yes to any of the above questions, then maybe it's time to prioritise? To focus on doing a few things well rather than fifty things poorly? Less chaos, more productivity.

If you're currently like I was for a long time, then perhaps it's time for you to stop (there's a thought), be still for a moment (another thought), step back from your life (metaphorically or maybe even, literally), gain some perspective and space, make some tough but necessary decisions (the ones you've been avoiding since 1993) and commit to prioritising your responsibilities, goals, time, energy, talent and even, your relationships. That is, either cross a few things off your to-do list completely, or put them on your 'to-do-much-later' list.

Factor10 Lifestyle Eating                            Know What You're Eating
  Food and Fitness Log
I often have people ask me for simple tools they can use to help track what they are eating on a daily basis.

I found this great website that has a Fitness Log that you can complete. It's a very cool website - well first of all it's free and that's a great bonus - but secondly it is a great way for you to start to track exactly what you eat and know how many carbs, fats and protein you are eating and how this compares to what you should be eating based on your level of activity.

Once you start entering the food you eat you'll start to learn the sorts of foods you can go with and the ones you need to eat less of or even stay away from.  Have a go and see if a self driven approach will help you.
