Tournament Update                                                        October 2010

Nationals Update - Melbourne
Local Tournament - Springwood
A very special congratulations to Stephanie Hodges and Maddy Houston who competed in Poomse competition at the Sports Taekwondo Australia national championships in Melbourne on the weekend of 24 to 26 September.  Maddy and Steph competed in Poomse in the 14-17division with Maddy taking silver and Steph bronze.

On 9 October members of our Factor10 Talent ID sparring team participated in a tournament at Springwood on Brisbane's south side.  Members enjoyed 2 matches each with real excitement enjoyed by all with their introduction to the new electronic scoring chest guards that we expect to see used at the 2012 London Olympic games.

The players really noticed how difficult it was to score given a much greater impact and pinpoint accuracy being required to score a point.  Sparring team members were Oliver Clarke, Dom Palleschi, Caitlin Paleschi, Zak Streeter, Lachlan Juric, Jordan Cushing, Aidan Butlin and Maddy Houston.  The Poomse team was Maddy Houston and Steph Hodges.  The crowd paid close attention to our Poomse specialists during their superb performances.

Factor10 Health Tips                                The 10 Rules for Aging Well

The 10 Rules of Aging Well
1. Eliminate Self Destructive Behaviors
This is the first step in preventing disease and meeting your later years with vitality and good health Balance 121010and it almost goes without saying - almost. The health toll of destructive behaviors such as smoking and excess drinking do not necessarily manifest for many years, thus discouraging motivation to stop.

2. Eat Properly
About 70% of health is about what you put in your body (exercise and stress comprise the rest of the equation). Though it's an estimate, of course, there is absolutely no debating that the food with which you choose to fuel your body is the single most powerful choice you can make for your health now and as you age.

3. Exercise
Much of "aging" is essentially tissue wasting (atrophy). The phrase "use it or lose it" is cliche but true. The human body is designed to conserve precious energy. If you are sedentary, you are sending a clear message to your cells (e.g. your muscles, bones, and brain) that they aren't necessary.

4. Manage Stress
An excess of gluccocorticoid hormone production will quickly derail the best health plans and prematurely age you. I'm tempted to argue that as a population, many of us are just too darn "old" for our age. The common "symptoms" of aging - high blood pressure, heart disease, adrenal fatigue, wrinkles, loss of sex drive, loss of energy, poor memory - are not really symptoms of aging at all. They're symptoms of stress and poor lifestyle choices.

5. Think Young
Your one life is a precious gift, but "thinking young" is about more than thinking positively or staying interested in current trends and world events. Realize that even at 55, 65, 75 and beyond, you are "young". As long as you are alive and taking every intelligent step to get the most from your body and your life, you are young. Living itself is the ultimate fountain of youth.

6. Get Rest
It's critical to cell repair and regeneration. Adequate sleep can drastically affect your lifespan and your well being, and unfortunately, we aren't getting nearly enough quality sleep.

7. Practice Good Hygiene
Aside from bathing and preventive habits like frequent hand washing, look after your dental health, your hearing, your vision, your nails, and your home. Be proud of your body and take care of it.

8. Prudent Supplementation
Like it or not, our food supply is not always sufficient for providing us with all the available tools to fight oxidation and stress or reduce our risk for certain diseases. Debates rage about organic, local, free-range ad infinitum. Do your best, of course, to provide your body with the freshest, most nutritious food you can.

9. Proactive Living
It's been said that many people fritter their lives away in despair, living someone else's dreams and choices. Take personal responsibility and seize the life you have been blessed with by making active choices about who you will love, how you will live, and what you will do.

10. Balance
Here's the last, but not least, bit of advice. If you're a thoughtful or responsible person it's easy to beat yourself up or get carried away with stress and perfectionist tendencies. We all have our "issues". Learn to seek balance and accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.

Factor10 Thinking Skills                                         Beliefs and Reality

Beliefs and Reality
It's true that for the most part our beliefs determine our reality. We create what we believe. Belief BlackWhite121010Not always but in the majority of cases. When we believe that something will be painful and difficult, we tend to create that experience - that reality. When we believe a situation or circumstance will be stressful, it typically will be. Why? Because a stress response or a stressful experience is not so much about the situation or circumstance as it is about the person (beliefs, expectations, attitude) in the middle of it. It's about you. It's about me.

When we believe that we'll never achieve a certain thing, the chances are we won't. And not because we don't necessarily have the potential, the skill, the time or the opportunity but mostly because we don't have the self-belief. Positive beliefs produce positive decisions and behaviours which, in turn, are more likely to produce positive experiences, results and reality. And, naturally, negative beliefs will do the opposite.

If you're a person who has a history of being held back - or maybe even controlled - by your self-limiting beliefs, here's my prescription for you:
1. Do one new (mildly uncomfortable) thing each day. This could be as minor as saying hello to a stranger, telling someone how you feel, jogging around the block, painting some furniture or changing a tyre (tire).
2. Once a week, challenge yourself to do something which makes you moderately uncomfortable. This could be physical, emotional or psychological discomfort. Or, all three!
3. Once a month, do something which requires a level of courage and commitment that will make you a little queasy in the guts. Technically speaking.
4. Plan and work towards something big. A major achievement (for you). It could be something physical like running a marathon, competing in a body-building (shaping) show or jumping out of a plane. Or it might be something a little more cerebral and emotional like starting a business, enrolling in a university course, overcoming that habit, making your stand-up comedy debut or buying a property.
