Academy Weekly Fly Around
Thursday 3 April 2008
Welcome to another exciting week.  We've been to New Zealand and back with our tournament squad and had a very successful trip.  Competition was tougher than expected which was great development for our players.  Congratulations to all of our players and parents who participated in the trip.

I am off to Melbourne tomorrow to coach Matt Fien in the Junior World Selection competition.  If Matt wins his division he will represent Australia at the Junior Worlds in Turkey later this year.  Matt will do us proud no matter what the result.

School holidays are coming up.  Remember that we are open all holidays for normal classes.  Our vacation program will run on the Monday 14th -Student free day.

Have a great week.

Our Core Values
by Fiona O'Flaherty
Our 5 Core Values

The third of our Core Values is

1.  Martial Arts is a life Journey.
2.  Always Persist
3.  Have Fun
4.  Family & Belonging is everything
5.  Strive for Personal Excellence

Today I am covering the last of our Core values- "Strive for Personal Excellence".  We believe it is important that everyone tries to do their best.  We don't compare each student with another and nor should you.  It is all about "Striving for Personal Excellence".

None of us are the same - different shapes, sizes, personalities etc.  We will always have different levels of performance.  What is important is that students understand that we expect them to be "TRYING" to do their best performance, "TRYING" to improve and get better and better than what they were last week!

We often have Parent's asking us what they can do to improve their child's performance.  Here are a few hints:

1.  Bring them to class twice a week on a very consistent basis.  Irregular training almost always results in a lack of confidence and a struggle to consolidate and learn their grading work.
2.  Don't let them "Quit" when they are having trouble learning something or getting their stripes for grading.  Encourage them to perservere.
3.  Attend more classes than normal to get their confidence back
4.  Purchase the grading DVD from reception so they can practice at home
5.  Book in for a Private lesson.
6.  Provide a space and a time at home which is convenient for the kids to do some home practice

Remember that these are our CORE VALUES at Brisbane Taekwondo and Hapkido Academy but I am sure most of you would be happy to apply them to all parts of our lives.

Vacation Program- Monday 14th April
by Damien O'Flaherty
Vacation Program will be held on Monday 14th April which is a student Free day for most schools.

Vacation Programs provide a great opportunity for students to mix with students across the whole club from a variety of ages.  They are designed to be a fun, social day mixed with many different training activities that we don't always get time to do in classes.

Booking forms will be given out in the next two weeks prior to school holidays.

Safety Reminder- Students and Families
by Fiona O'Flaherty
Compulsory- Mouthguards and Water Bottle

A reminder to all parents that it is compulsory for all Junior, Teenage and Adult students to have a mouthguard to be worn during sparring.  It is probable that students will be asked to sit out of sparring if they don't have a mouthguard.

Water Bottles are also compulsory for ALL students.  It is an essential habit that students learn to drink water whilst exercising.  The cups in the kitchen are only there for Parents and members wanting to drink tea and coffee, as we are not able to wash up after everyone that uses them for drinking water during classes!!

If possible we ask parents to keep noise to a minimum in the foyer area.  There have been a number of occassions lately where it has been difficult to teach and distracting for the students because of the noise coming from the waiting area.  Your cooperation with this would be appreciated.  We really do want the best possible learning environment for the students.
