Academy Weekly Fly Around
Thursday 27 March 2008
|
| Well, Easter has come and gone and from what I can gather from talking to people around the Academy everyone has had a great time. I hope you still have some Easter Eggs left!!
Tommorrow I fly out to New Zealand with a team of 15 members from the Academy for the New Zealand Open. We compete on Saturday and fly home Monday. We hope everyone performs to the best of their abiility. I'll let you know the results when we return.
Next weekend I fly to Melbourne to coach Matt Fien in the Junior World Selection competition. If Matt wins his division he will represent Australia at the Junior Worlds in Turkey later this year. Go hard Matt!
Remember that all sport classes (Junior and Senior) are cancelled tomorrow night (Friday 28th) because we are in New Zealand.
Have a great week.

Our 5 Core Values
The third of our Core Values is
1. Martial Arts is a life Journey. 2. Always Persist 3. Have Fun 4. Family & Belonging is everything
The fourth core value we have is Family and Belonging is everything. Hopefully you have noticed that we are a very "Family Oriented" club. It is reeally important to us. We have a huge amount of members who have Brothers, Sisters, Mums and Dads, Husbands and Wifes training with us.
We want your training to become part of your life, it is just what you do. Martial Arts is all about the bigger family- we treat our students like they are part of the family- our family, Master Lee's family. Damien and I love nothing more than knowing that the students can't wait to get here each day, and that they would be here everyday if they could! What a happy, healthy routine to get in to for both the younger and older students we have.
If you want to get more involved keep an eye on the calendar for different social activities that we have for our members. It is a great way to get to know each other.

Damien & Fiona's background

I was asked recently "Have you always done this?"
I was asked recently by one of our Mum's, "have you and Damien always done this?" It got me thinking that a lot of our members probably don't know our backgrounds or much about us so I thought I would use this opportunity to give you a quick run down.
Damien is a qualified Primary School teacher and taught in the Catholic Education system for a number of years. He then became a full time musician playing locally in solos, duos and bands. He did this for a number of years before getting back in to Adult education in TAFE teaching. Within a number of years he was an Associate Director of the TAFE college in Innisfail, then Bremer Institute (Ipswich) and Brisbane institute (Ithaca). Following this for 12 months he served as the TAFE liaison Manager to the Director General.
In 1994 Damien began running Taekwondo classes out of rented premises in a number of locations across Brisbane, whilst working Full time.
In 1996 we opened our first full time Academy at Albany Creek in the Country Club estate called East Coast Taekwondo, and moved to bigger premises at Strathpine in 2003 with Damien running the Centres full time.
I am a qualified PE teacher and taught at Tully and Innisfail High Schools in North Queensland for 7 years prior to having our children. I took maternity leave and we moved back to Brisbane in 1994 to have our first son Dan and be closer to our families. In 1996 we had our second son Ryan. Whilst on leave I did some lecturing at QUT in PE department and assisted with the running of our new full time centre.
I returned to teaching part time in 2001 as PE teacher at Brookfield State School where I taught until 2006. I am currently on leave working in the Academy Full time.
This is only a brief summary of our careers but hopefully one which will help you understand our background. The fact that both of us are qualified School teachers is a very unique situation in the Martial Arts Industry - in fact one that I doubt you will find in any other martial Arts school.

 |
Vacation Program will be held on Monday 14th April which is a student Free day for most schools.
Vacation Programs provide a great opportunity for students to mix with students across the whole club from a variety of ages. They are designed to be a fun, social day mixed with many different training activities that we don't always get time to do in classes.
Booking forms will be given out in the next two weeks prior to school holidays.
