Academy Weekly Fly Around
Friday 29 November 2007
Greetings!
Welcome to the "new look" Academy weekly fly around.  I am really excited to launch this new look fly around as it represents another step in improving our communicaitons with all  members.

One of my goals for the Academy into 2008 is to see if we can improve our communication methods to members to make sure you are really up to date with the latest happenings.

So this new look Weekly Fly Around is part of the improved communications strategy.  To add to this, "watch this space " for the re-launch of our monthly "Way of the Warrior" Academy Newsletter that will be out soon.

Black Belt Grading Sat 8 Dec 8.30am
by Damien O'Flaherty
Master Lee 9th Dan Hapkido and Taekwondo visits
MasterLeeIt's been a little while since Master Lee has been to Brisbane to assess our black belts, so the coming grading is an extra special event for all concerned.  We pregraded about 12 black belts sitting a range of black belt grades from Cho Dan Bo to 3rd Dan across both Taekwondo and Hapkido.

Please come and enjoy the excellence of our black belts who have taken on the personal challenge of striving for their own excellence.  We are so proud of them for persisting to attain a level of mastery we strive for in the martial arts.  The timber board breaking will be a spectacular feature of the grading so feel free to pop down and enjoy the grading starting at 8.30am.

Pine Rivers Christmas Parade Sat 8 Dec 4.30pm
by Deb Houston
Participants Needed
SantaOnce again our Academy is performing as part of the Pine Rivers Shire Christmas Parade on Saturday 8 December.  This is on the same day as our Awards Night however we think we can manage two events on the one day well.  Notices will be handed out this week in class.

Start time is 5pm so participating members need to meet at 4.30pm at the marshaling yard located in Learmonth Street opposite Westfield Strathpine.

There are 8000 spectators expected.  If you are interested please leave you name at Reception.  All enquiries about the parade please call our coordinator Debbie Houston on 0433 901 409.   We will be doing informal demonstrations on the parade and it is so much fun.  We really need members to participate.

Parents Nite Out a Great Success
by Fiona O'Flaherty
Pizza and Movie Night Good Fun
HollywoodWith around 35 members participating in the Parents Nite Out last Saturday Night we felt great that some mums and dads had a chance to spend some quality time with each other while membrs enjoyed the social interaction over pizza softdrink and a movie.

A very special thanks to our trusty crew - Courtney, Jay, Jenny, Alex, Amy and Nathan who organised the event and supported the children until around 11pm as the last parents came to pick up some very tired members.  We will do more of these next year - loads of fun!

Breaking - Back to a Lost Martial Art Tradition

JayBreakingI have had so many questions about the breaking event at the Academy comp with people who said they had heard about Martial Artists breaking concrete tiles but never before seen this.

This is a tradition we have hung on to at the Academy - it's an authentic technical and mental skill we pride ourselves on.  It is true that very few martial arts schools practice concrete tile breaking as the knowledge on how to do this is largely lost.

The theory is based on Newton's Law - F = M x A - Force equals mass times acceleration.  Well, that's the theory, but in practice there is much more than this.

This is the Art part of the "Martial Arts" where Academies like Brisbane Taekwondo and Hapkido make it hapen.  Go team!

Last Grading Date Tue 11 Dec
by Damien O'Flaherty
Colour Belt Gradings
ToddSheltonPoomseMost members would be aware that colour belt gradings are held every Tuesday evening from 5.15pm to 6.15pm.  Members book into their grading the week before once they have attained all their pre grading coloured stripes and the instructor hands out the grading envelope.

Tuesday 11 December will be the last designated Tuesday evening grading at Strathpine with Ipswich, West Brisbane, Esk and Coominya having their last grading for the year in the week of 3 to 7 December.

Strathpine gradings will resume in the new year in the first week back while branches run their gradings according to their local schedules.

A special congratulations to all members for setting their personal goals for grading development and achieving them accordingly.  The technical standard at the academy has been extraordinary in recent gradings and this is a credit to the work of all instructors and support from family in helping our members become the great Martial Artists that they are.
