"I really like teaching Safe Sitter® because I get a chance to work with the older campers. I share some of my past experiences as a babysitter and it has made me more aware of the kind of babysitter I want to watch my kids!"

Teaching Tip of the Month

"We had our students make a 'commercial' for Safe Sitter®. They made two skits on why it's important to take a Safe Sitter® class. One skit covered why babysitters should know the rescue skills and the other demonstrated why babysitters should know behavior management skills. It was fun and kept them entertained when they were done eating lunch! We showed it to the parents during the Ceremony and they loved it! We also showed it to our hospital administrator, who happens to be a pediatrician, and he cracked up and loved it as well! We teach both courses and plan to do it for all future 2-day classes."

Safe Sitters of the Year

Tiffany, William and Elaine

Safe Sitter® grads and sisters Elaine and Tiffany are true to their name. They're so close that they worked together to save a life. That work led them to be named Safe Sitters of the Year!

Two weeks after completing a Safe Sitter® class at their local hospital in Wisconsin, Elaine, 14, and Tiffany, 13, used what they'd learned about staying calm to help their brother, William, 12, through a severe asthma attack while their parents were away.

"They keep an eye on each other while we're at work," their mother, Fran, said. "They handled it calmly and accurately."

Will, who's had asthma for the past five years, always puts his inhaler in his right coat pocket so everyone knows where it is. However, on this particular day, he'd put it in his left coat pocket so his sisters couldn't find it.

"The girls have seen so many of his attacks and know how to give him his medication," Fran said. "Sometimes he waits too long to use his inhaler, though, because he doesn't like the taste."

When Will's breathing was getting worse and his sisters couldn't locate the inhaler, they called 911 as well as their parents at work. Fran made it home just after the arrival of EMS.

Both girls realized how serious a situation it was. "I was helping Will to stay calm," Elaine said. "We were scared because he'd never had an attack like this one before. But Safe Sitter® helped me know what to do and to stay calm."

Tiffany, who comforted Will while Elaine tried to locate his inhaler, said, "We knew his breathing was getting a lot worse. I knew not to panic. Elaine finally found the inhaler and he was getting better by the time EMS came."

Two hours later, Will told his mother he didn't feel well so he was taken to immediate care. They learned that a virus was responsible for setting off his severe asthma attack.

Fran, who sent a letter of appreciation to Leesa, the girls' Instructor at the hospital, said, "Everyone that responded said they did a great job! Thanks to the people who taught them Safe Sitter®, Elaine and Tiffany knew what to do!"

Q. What are the advantages of training new Safe Sitter® Instructors by DVD?

A.  The advantages of a live Instructor Workshop are more obvious, but consider the following advantages of training new Instructors by DVD:

·       Cost - Most organizations need to cut costs these days - video training eliminates travel costs.

·       Timing - DVD training can be timed to fit your busy schedules.

·       Time Commitment - Without lunch and breaks, it takes less time to be trained by DVD.

·       Can Keep DVD for 3 Weeks - Instructors can watch parts (or all) of the DVD again if they have questions or want to refresh before teaching their first class. Existing Instructors can even watch parts of the DVD to refresh while new Instructors are being trained. (They won't receive new materials unless they pay the $50 though.)

·       Same Fee as Live Workshop - The fee, $50, to train by DVD is the same as a live workshop!  And if a site trains 4 new Instructors, the 5th Instructor is FREE! There is a shipping charge of $25 (no matter how many Instructors you train) to cover shipping the materials to you and getting the DVD back to us.

Please feel free to call or email infochristi@safesitter.org if you have questions about DVD training.
