This Safe SitterŪ Showed Perfect Timing

Jill and Everett

Safe Sitters never know when they will need to use lifesaving skills. In the case of Jill, 11, it was the same day she graduated from the program!

Jill, who took Safe SitterŪ at her local hospital in Florida in July, demonstrated Choking Infant Rescue during the graduation ceremony where her mother, Lori, and grandparents were in attendance. "On the way home from class, Jill said, 'That's a lot of responsibility - I don't know if I want to babysit!'" Lori said. "We talked about the ways she could start out babysitting slowly and with preschoolers."

Jill expressed her worries about a child dying while under her supervision. "My mom explained to me that babysitting is a huge responsibility but things like that (choking) rarely happen. It made feel better but I was still worried deep down inside."

Jill's grandfather asked the new Safe SitterŪ grad about rescuing someone who was choking. Jill explained exactly how and why the procedure worked. Little did Jill know that this mental step-by-step review would prove invaluable just a few hours later.

As Jill hung out in her bedroom with some friends after class, they heard Lori screaming for help from the other end of the house. Lori, who was standing at her front door chatting with a neighbor, had given Jill's 7-year-old nephew, Everett, a piece of hard candy.

When Lori realized Everett was choking, her first thought was to call 911. Then, she remembered that Jill had just completed class that day and yelled for her. Jill ran as fast as she could when she heard her mother's cries for help.

"Everett was holding his throat, unable to talk or cough. I told him that he was going to be okay. I got behind him and did the abdominal thrusts," Jill said. "Two pieces of hard candy popped out on the third thrust. Then he vomited up everywhere-all over the floor, his feet and my feet!" While Lori cleaned up the floor, Jill comforted her nephew by rubbing his back and telling him that she loved him.

"He said in the funniest voice, 'That was really scary!'" Jill said, adding that within a few minutes Everett was back up and running. "I wouldn't have known what to do if I hadn't just learned it in my Safe SitterŪ class. I remembered what to do and to stay calm. I was so happy it worked!"

"Everett was staying all night with us," Lori said. "Jill woke me up twice in the middle of the night just so we could check to make sure he was okay. All the neighbors want to hire her now!"
The Many Reasons "Y" They're So Successful

Nancy Wroblewski

The Monroe County YMCA in Bloomington, Indiana, home of Indiana University, has taken full advantage of its status as the heart of a college town.

"We have quite a large population of different cultures. I have had many students from around the globe," said Instructor and Site Coordinator Nancy Wroblewski.

"We also have a large child care center and the students get lots of experience working with the children as part of their Safe SitterŪ class. We also have adapted the course for students with learning disabilities," she added.

The Monroe County YMCA has been offering Safe SitterŪ for the past 15 years. Nancy, who's been teaching for 12 of those years, said classes are always full-even with 6 or 7 being offered each year.

"We have caring, educated staff that are passionate about their jobs. We are community-minded and a safe and happy place. This keeps everyone coming back for Safe SitterŪ classes," she said.

To get those students coming back, classes are promoted through the Y's catalog, fliers, posters and the local newspaper. Instructors, on the other hand, are recruited through interested employees at the Y who enjoy working with young adolescents. Collaboration with Bloomington Hospital provides valuable assistance in teaching rescue skills.

"My Safe Sitter® students in the Bloomington community all become qualified safe babysitters," Nancy said. "Many parents are now highly encouraging their children to complete the Safe SitterŪ course before they are allowed to babysit. This has developed many educated young adolescents who know and feel comfortable performing many safety skills."

All this, along with teaching classes in a beautiful facility with supportive staff, makes for an endlessly rewarding experience, adds Nancy.

"I have enjoyed every course I have ever taught," she said. "I feel good that the children in our community will be well taken care of by qualified Safe Sitters.

Ask Safe SitterŪ

Q. What are the advantages of becoming a fan of

Safe SitterŪ on Facebook?

A. As an organization, we are relatively new to Facebook. Most of our fans are Safe SitterŪ Instructors, but we also have graduates, parents, and others interested in Safe SitterŪ. So, as Safe SitterŪ Instructors, please tell us what types of information would be most beneficial or interesting to you.

Right now, we have some background information on Safe SitterŪ, a new Hero story each month, and a list of the upcoming Instructor Workshops. And, of course, becoming a fan of Safe SitterŪ on Facebook allows you to interact with other Safe SitterŪ Instructors and provides you with an opportunity to give feedback and ask questions. Please email support@safesitter.org with your suggestions.
