Teaching Tip of the Month
"During the Ceremony, each student shakes our hand using a proper handshake, with good eye contact, to demonstrate one of the business skills they have learned in front of their parents, siblings, etc. We do it when we call them up to receive their completion card and button at the end. This allows us to take the opportunity to review the importance of a good first impression when meeting the employer for the first time."

Ask Safe SitterŪ
Q. Why doesn't Safe SitterŪ have 2 different completion cards for the 2 different courses?
A. When completing either course, students become Safe SitterŪ graduates. One course isn't better than the other - they are just different. So it's not necessary to specify which course the students have completed for them to be Safe Sitters. | |

Like Mother, Like Daughter
"Enthusiasm is contagious. Be a carrier." Susan Rabin's quote defines Linda and Kristen Steiner, mother and daughter, and both carriers of enthusiasm!
Linda, a nurse at St. Mary's Health Matters Center in Evansville, IN, was talking to one of her co-workers, a Safe SitterŪ Instructor, about the program at the hospital. This friend was so enthusiastic about Safe SitterŪ that Linda knew she wanted to teach Safe SitterŪ too, but in her role as a Parish Nurse at her church. Linda received money from the Welborn Foundation to start the program at First United Methodist Church in Princeton, IN, in June of 2003. Linda's daughter, Kristen, then 13 years old, was a student in their first class.
Kristen became a part of every class by taking photos for the slide show at the Ceremony, telling each group of students how taking Safe SitterŪ made her a better babysitter, helping with lunch, etc. At each class, she demonstrated enthusiasm for both Safe SitterŪ and babysitting. As soon as Kristen turned 18, she became an Instructor.
"I absolutely love Safe SitterŪ," said Kristen. "I believe it is the best program to teach kids to be safe, responsible babysitters. I had a blast when I took the class and I couldn't wait until I turned 18 so I could become an Instructor! At each class, I would talk to the students about how I was a Safe SitterŪ graduate and how much the class helped me every time I babysat."
The church offers the program two to three times a year. "We live in a very rural area," Linda said. "Our first class only had children of our church members but now our Safe SitterŪ program is a community outreach. Sometimes the students are so quiet at first. Then they start to open up as they see how much fun the class is. I love seeing them grow in their skills as the day goes on."
Linda says the students can relate to Kristen, who is now going to college to become a teacher. Kristen taught her first class a little over a year ago, shortly after becoming an Instructor. "It was just an amazing experience," Kristen said. "Teaching along side my mom, who had been my Instructor, was even more wonderful and fun than I had hoped for! The kids had such a great time - they all came up to me at the end to say how much fun they'd had and how much they'd learned. I'd always known how important this course is, but it was great to see the kids realize that Safe SitterŪ really can make a difference in their lives too!" |
