41st Anniversary Benefit Dinner

Thursday - March 10, 2011

December 22, 2010

Dear Friends and Supporters

We are very excited over our upcoming 41st Annual Benefit Dinner scheduled for March 10, 2011. The development of the Mercado Del Barrio mixed use center will be featured as the most recent significant milestone for Barrio Logan.  The community has long awaited this monumental project that will offer employment opportunities, 92 affordable housing units, a super market specializing in Hispanic products, restaurants and many other amenities.   We are happy to inform you that the concerted efforts of Shea Properties, Northgate Gonzalez Markets and Chelsea Housing have resulted in this magnificent redevelopment project for Barrio Logan.

Our annual dinner is primarily held to honor the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, one of the greatest humanitarians of our nation's history.  Cesar brought field workers out of legalized slavery and ensured that field worker children would receive an education and would no longer be exempt from child labor laws.  Cesar also inspired the historic Mexican American mobilization that helped our community benefit from opportunities that the majority society consistently enjoyed.  Vast leadership has been developed as a result of Cesar's service and sacrifice; at the grassroots level, corporate sector, public service, academia, public safety and more. Cesar helped communities in all areas of need and all ethnicities and successfully attracted over 17,000 volunteers immediately upon the public's awareness of his efforts. At our dinner individuals will be honored who exemplify Cesar's commitment through their significant contributions to the San Diego region and beyond.

We proudly invite you to help sponsor our upcoming benefit dinner. The proceeds will enable Barrio Station to continue providing impactful programs and services.  We also need improvements to our primary facility called Barrio Youth Center, a 50,000 sq. ft. safe haven for high risk kids that also serves as the parks and recreation center for Barrio Logan and neighboring communities. Construction of the I-5 freeway isolated Barrio Logan from the amenities of the greater Logan Heights community. The center includes the following: a community swimming pool; theater; a children's activities room; a game room; a gymnasium complete with 26 Hoist cardio and exercise machines; a boxing ring and work out area, lockers and showers; a 27 computer station learning lab; counseling and community meeting rooms and administrative offices. Meeting areas are utilized to engage residents in community empowerment efforts and for youth group counseling sessions.

Each year 700 guests contribute to our programs and major capital needs through underwriting and table sponsorships and through live donations during the actual event.  We ask that you consider being an underwriter or table sponsor of this years' special 41st Anniversary celebratory event. As an underwriter you will receive preferred seating and recognition in our printed program as outlined in the enclosed Underwriter Sponsorship and Table Reservation Order Form.

Please provide your Ad information by January 31, 2011 so that we may proceed with printing our Annual Report.  We also ask that you RSVP for seating no later than February 25, 2011 for organization and individual recognition in the printed program.

The success of our annual dinner is due in part to holding our event in our own community theater instead of hotels, thereby maximizing the level of proceeds for priority needs.  Leaders of all sectors attend and see our community facilities first hand.  You may call me or my secretary Diane Armenta at (619) 238-0314 to confirm your participation or for more information.  The formal invitation mailer will follow soon.  Thank you for your kind consideration of this request.

Sinceramente,

Barrio Station - Serving Youth in Barrio Logan

Barrio Station (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit) is located in the historical Barrio Logan area of San Diego since 1970.  Barrio Station operates the Barrio Youth Center serving over 2,500 youth ages six (6) to eighteen (18) annually through center based activities, sport competition and outings.  The agency offers free after-school activities, furthering the Barrio Station's basic mission: to discourage delinquency, youth violence and gang involvement, and encourage civic responsibility and successful school performance among the youth.
