Educational Crisis in the United States:
 
-Only 1 in 8 Latinos in the U.S. have a college degree. But it is projected that by 2020, 3 in 5 jobs will require a college degree!

-In a recent report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, one out of three students scored "below basic" on the 2009 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) Reading Test. Among these low performing students, 49 percent come from low-income families. Even more alarming is the fact that more than 67 percent of all US fourth graders scored "below proficient," meaning they are not reading at grade level!

-The Harvard Civil Rights Project study of 2005 found that only 50% of Latinos and African-Americans Students graduate from High School in California!

-The McKinsey & Co. report entitled "The Economic Impact of the Achievement Gap in American Schools" found Students in the United States rank 25th in the World among developed Nations in MATH & SCIENCE!

-The Center for Community Change in D.C. found that 85% of adult prisoners in the United States and 75% of Youth in the Juvenile Justice System are High School Dropouts!

ONE PROVEN SOLUTION:

On the Frontlines of Schools" reported that research has overwhelmingly shown that parental involvement can significantly improve student achievement, with the children of engaged parents having a higher likelihood of attending class, having fewer behavioral problems, excelling in school and successfully graduating with a diploma. Research has also shown that students tend to agree, as dropouts felt that more parental involvement would have been helpful in keeping them on track to graduate.

Executive Summary of Statement by Anne T. Henderson, Senior Consultant Community Organizing and Engagement, Annenberg Institute for School Reform Before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions April 22, 2010 states that Children spend 70 percent of their waking hours outside of school, and how they spend that time is critical to their success in school
