Day of the Dead at Fiesta de Reyes

-- Largest Altar in Old Town Displayed at Fiesta de Reyes --

Fiesta de Reyes, located in Old Town, is hosting a free, unique celebration commemorating "Dia de los Muertos" featuring a live performance from Chronos Theater Group on Nov. 1.  Between now and Nov. 1 visitors to Fiesta de Reyes can see a myriad of altars on display, including one 16-foot by 10-foot, believed to be the largest in town.

Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to celebrate loved ones that have passed.

Dia de los Muertos altars are on display in many of the stores at Fiesta de Reyes including one that encompasses the entire stage in the Fiesta de Reyes courtyard. The altar showcases two huge four-foot-tall calaveras (skulls), and a custom painted canvas depicting Our Mother of Guadalupe along with other traditional altar offerings.

The Dia de los Muertos memorial performance is from 6 to 8 p.m on Nov. 1. Chronos will bring the dead alive through lively storytelling through more than a dozen local professional actors, accompanied with live music.

This event is part of the Historic Old Town's Day of the Dead celebration. More than 25 local businesses, museums and community organizations have created the traditional Mexican altars and ofrendas (offerings to the dead). Restaurants will offer a variety of specialties and specialty drinks.  Music, traditional poetry readings and more will accompany the celebration, along with a candlelight procession from the Whaley House to El Campo Santo Cemetery at 8 p.m.

Visitors may visit all of the Old Town altars using a free self-guided tour map, available online at www.oldtownsandiego.org, www.otsdguide.com, or www.Whaleyhouse.org

Fiesta de Reyes is located within Old Town San Diego State Historic Park at Wallace and Calhoun streets, a one-block stroll from the Old Town Trolley Station.  Free parking is available in the Caltrans parking lot all day on weekends. In addition to two dining establishments -- Casa de Reyes and Barra Barra Saloon - Fiesta de Reyes boasts 16 specialty stores open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.  For more information call (619) 297-3100 or visit www.FiestaDeReyes.com.
