Greetings!
It has been quite a year for our organization! A year ago we set our sights on strengthening our core programming and infrastructure so we could provide better programming and services to the Greater Golden Hill Community. A year later we are proud to say that we are doing just that, as evident by the success of our membership program that has doubled in size and ourMonthly Mixer series. We continue to strive to engage those we serve in our affordable housing sites by providing additional support and increased communication with each of our tenants. Our community partners program has become more than just a relationship on paper. It continues to develop intomore meaningful partnerships within and outside our community. The Clean, Green & Safe program has become a model for all MAD's for its transparent and responsible implementation. As an organization, we continue to strive to meet our mission by representing all in Greater Golden Hill in projects like the 25th street Renaissance and The Community Plan Update. Finally, through our Golden Tickets Program, hundreds of youth were able to attend San Diego events that may have otherwise been out of reach. A lot has been accomplished this year and we invite you to take a minute to view our 2009/2010 Annual Presentation for more details on what has been accomplished.
We enter our new fiscal year with plenty of momentum after celebrating Greater Golden Hill with our 3rd Annual Gala. As you will see in this newsletter, there is plenty happening within Greater Golden Hill over the next few months. We challenge you to not only become involved with our organization, but all the efforts launching to improve the quality of life in Greater Golden Hill.
As we prepare to celebrate our 20th anniversary, we have set a bold goal this year to meet and engage 100 Greater Golden Hill Leaders that we do not already know. With your help, we know this can be a successful objective. If you are interested in becoming more involved please feel free to contact me directly and we will be certain to find the right fit for you!
Gracias,
Pedro Anaya Jr.

Broken Sidewalks, Curbs & Lights
Missing Street Curbs?
Does your residence, business or neighborhood street have deteriorated street curbs? Block after block of Greater Golden Hill have numerous, altogether missing or crumbling curbs which have worn down to dirt and rocks. The average street curb in Golden Hill was installed over 100 years ago using little more than river rocks and a homemade concrete veneer! Upgrade your curb appeal for free. Submit your repair request directly to the City's Street Repair Division. These neglected curbs will further deteriorate creating a bigger eye sore throughout our beautiful neighborhoods. The overall impact of having all the missing or damaged curbs in the area fixed will significantly add to our 2010 Greater Golden Hill improvement efforts: trees, rocks, benches and numerous replaced sidewalks.
Got Street Lights?
Dozens and dozens of street lights have burnt out bulbs. Logically, most people think we are responsible for replacing these burnt out bulbs. In fact, it is the City that handles these requests. These can also be reported directly to the City's Street Division. NOTE: The Clean, Green & Safe Program does handle cleaning of graffitti on all lights.
Does Your Sidewalk Look Like a Skateboard Ramp?
We are getting the word out to all property owners and residents of the Greater Golden Hill Community that if your sidewalk has been uplifted by a City owned tree (those located inside the curb median) then the Street Repair Division will replace or repair it at no charge to you. In order to fix it, they must first be made aware of the problem.
HERE IS HOW TO REPORT THESER ISSUES!
To create a service request for repairs or services on street related issues, please select one of the following options:
We want to help!If after reporting the issue it is not corrected in a timely manner please contact our offices at info@goldenhillcdc.org and we will advocate on your behalf. |
Stone Brewing is Coming to South Park
Stone Brewing Co. is proud to announce plans to open a Stone Company Store in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego. Stone believes that South Park-with its central location, pedestrian/bike friendly streets, and strong sense of local community-is the perfect location.
The Stone Company Store | South Park will bring Stone Brewing Co. merchandise and growler fills to the city of San Diego for the first time. Growlers, which are endlessly reusable, are the most environmentally sustainable way to drink Stone beers at home.
Stone Co-Founder & CEO Greg Koch said, "South Park is such a wonderful community with a fantastic and growing craft beer scene. We are excited to contribute to the continued strengthening and development of this unique, tight-knit neighborhood." Stone Brewing Co. has signed a lease on a building to house The Stone Company Store | South Park and hopes to open by late 2010.

We have a desire to see the neighborhood and the surrounding communities continue to thrive and improve, and we are proud to be a part of the community of businesses that have been working to increase the quality of life here. City Council Moves Permanent Homeless Services Center Plans Forward
Comprehensive Care and Housing Would Be Available at the World Trade Center Site
SAN DIEGO, CA (October 5, 2010) - San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria is proud to report that the City Council moved forward today with plans for San Diego's first permanent homeless service and housing facility. The facility is proposed for the World Trade Center, located on the corner of Sixth Ave. and A St. in downtown San Diego.
The Council voted 8-0 to enter into negotiations with the project's developer and service providers to finalize plans for the facility, which would combine healthcare, mental health services, substance abuse care, and job training with housing.
"A permanent homeless services center is the most important civic project the City Council can consider, and its completion will make better use of limited taxpayer funds while improving the quality of life of its clients and strengthening the downtown community," said Councilmember Gloria.
The proposed project would house 223 individuals in a secure, regulated environment and accommodate services to care for them. The proposal was brought forward by a coalition including Family Health Centers, Affirmed Housing and PATH, which runs similar very successful comprehensive service facilities for homeless in Los Angeles.
"The permanent homeless services project will truly help our homeless neighbors lead productive, healthy lives, and I am extremely proud of my Council colleagues for finally taking this step," said Councilmember Gloria. "I am confident this facility will be a model for comprehensive care that we will want to replicate to ensure that help is available to all who need it."
With today's action, the City of San Diego enters into exclusive negotiating agreement with Connections Housing. Through the negotiation process, project details, funding and neighborhood mitigation measures will be developed. The negotiations are expected to conclude in Spring 2011, after which the City Council will consider approval of the facility.
We are interested in knowing how you feel about this decision...please e-mail your comments to info@goldenhillcdc.org and we will forward your comments on to your city council representatives. |

On a Final Note!
...of all the bike shops you could have walked into, you walked into mine!
Last month a man walked into Thomas Bike Shop to sell a custom bike valued at at nearly $10,000 dollars. Of course what the man failed to realized after he had stolen the bike from another bike shop was that the man behind the counter was non other than co-owner of the shop, Don. Otherwise know as officer Don of the San Diego Police Department. After convincing the man that he had a potential buyer (the buyers were individuals that could identify the thief) Don, being off duty, held the man in custody until on duty officers could take him away. The bike was returned to its much relieved original owners.
