The Mexica'yotl Indio Cultural Center

 29th Annual Danza Azteca Ceremony

Dear ,

For nearly 30 years the Mexi'cayotl Indio Cultural Center (MICC) has been dedicated to teaching and preserving the indigenous cultures of Mxico and the Southwestern United States. MICC has always had a strong emphasis on teaching the traditions to youth and their families.  This cultural and familial educational experience has been shared with hundreds of San Diego residents, has united families, and builds self-esteem and goal setting skills for our youth.  Today they have become lawyers, doctors, educators, and non-profit practitioners contributing to our community on a daily basis through their professions. However, they also continue to empower new generations to succeed by sharing the pride and beauty of their culture and traditions. To continue this important work we need your support.

Through its weekly classes in traditional Azteca dance and music; classes in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecas; special events programming; traditional dance ceremonies; and publication of audio cassettes and books MICC proudly shares these traditions with the San Diego region. Workshops are provided for all skill levels including a beginner's session, where participants not only learn the steps but their historic, spiritual and cultural significance. All classes are open to all ages and FREE and have been taught in the communities of Southeastern San Diego, Sherman Heights, Chula Vista, and San Ysidro. As a result of these workshops, MICC has been able to touch thousands of people across all demographic indicators. The group has strategically located the workshops to be accessible to communities that traditionally lack economic resources. Danza Mexica'yotl performs at community events, colleges and schools, festivals, churches, and local reservations. During the presentations, those present witness this beautiful dance tradition and learn about the language, the significance of the regalia worn by the dancers, and how these cultural roots are part of the Southwestern indigenous tradition.. The presentations provide participants with a great sense of pride in their heritage and culture, and at the same time the message of the importance of seeking higher education and giving back to your community is portrayed as a central message.

To celebrate their work and these traditions annually, MICC brings together over 200 dancers from thoughout the United States and Mexico to participate in dance in the San Diego Community. In honor of the 30th anniversary of the founding of Danza Mexi'cayotl, MICC is sponsoring its Seventh International Danza Azteca Symposium, July 22- 25th, 2010 in conjunction with its Thirtieth Annual Aztec Dance Celebration in San Ysidro and Chicano Park. Two hundred dancers and their families will convene in the historic neighborhoods of Barrio Logan and San Ysidro to celebrate this tradition and the success of MICC's programming.

To host over 200 dancers and to provide our weekly workshops we depend on the gifts of time, treasure, and talents of our community. We have included a list of items and services we are currently seeking to obtain.  As an official 501(c) 3 not-for-profit, we can provide you with a receipt for all donations. If you or your organizations are interested in participating and supporting the work of MICC, or you have any questions, please contact us at any of the numbers below. The Mexi'cayotl Indio Cultural Center is helping to empower people to create true self-determination, with an emphasis on the preservation of Mexico's Native American's rich and unique cultural legacy. Over the past 30 years our program participants have not only performed locally but have been invited to participate at events throughout the United States and Mexico. Our youngest participants have been able to visit the most famous archeological sites of Mexico and dance with their indigenous brothers and sisters in New Mexico. Those trips, paired with the lessons they have learned, have given our participants truly a life changing experience. With your help we will continue to do this for another 30 years!

Thank You,
