Sponsor the 2010 Commemorative Events

In 2009 the Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee brought together thousands of participants and attracted substantial media and public attention highlighting the spirit, values and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez; but more importantly they inspired and change lives. For over 15 years our events and programs have been successful in bringing thousands of San Diegans together to celebrate the spirit and values of Cesar E. Chavez thanks to the generous sponsorship provided by organizations such as yours.

Motivated by last year, we have selected El Arte de La Inspiracin / the Art of Inspiration as the theme for our 2010 series. The 12th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Breakfast will be held at the San Diego Convention Center on March 29, 2010 where once again we will highlight the winner of our 12th Annual High School Essay Contest. This year's breakfast will be the culmination of several events, including the annual Cesar E. Chavez Memorial March/Parade and Community Celebration, to be held on March 27, 2010. We will also build on the success of our newest events by hosting the 2nd Annual Service Learning Educator Conference and 2nd Annual Cesar E. Chavez Day of Service.

Over the next few weeks we will be distributing our sponsorship opportunities and hope you w will consider joining us this year as one of our partners for 2010!  As we strive to be "green" we would like to know how you would prefer to receive your sponsorship packet this year; either by e-mail as a PDF or via US Postal Service. We look forward to hearing from you and are very excited to work closely with you. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us by replying to this e-mail or you can reach us by phone at (619) 252-9557

SIGN THE PETITION: Giumarra Vineyards sued by EEOC for Sexual Harassment & Retaliation

Sign our petition
We need your help. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has just filed suit against Giumarra Vineyards for allegedly violating federal law by sexually harassing a teenage female farm worker and retaliating against farm workers who came to her aid.

You most probably remember Giumarra, and their Nature's Partner label, from the emails we sent you last summer. We told you about their outrageous behavior and despicable actions against workers-many of whom are organizing for a union contract. Giumarra Vineyards, the world's largest table grape company, harvests approximately 1 out of every 10 bunches of grapes picked in the US. Because the company is so huge, their behavior helps set the industry standard.

The EEOC case is consistent with the company's behavior, as Giumarra has a long history of intimidating workers and violating their rights. According to the EEOC's suit (EEOC v. Giumarra Vineyards Corporation, et al, Case No. 1:09-cv-02255), the young woman "was subjected to sexual advances, sexually inappropriate touching and abusive and offensive sexual comments about the male sex organ by a male co-worker." The EEOC further alleged that after witnessing the sexual harassment, farm workers came to the aid of the teenage victim and complained to Giumarra Vineyards.

The result? One day after reporting the incident, the victim and people who helped her were fired. The EEOC suit states they "were summarily discharged in retaliation for their opposition to the sexual harassment." (More details in the
EEOC's press release.)

What happened to this vulnerable young girl and the others who simply came to her defense was reprehensible and illegal.

We have begun an online petition. A delegation of women leaders will hand it in to Giumarra/Nature's Partner and attempt to meet with this company in mid-February. Please sign the petition today-and send it to as many friends as possible. Give Giumarra a strong message that you will not tolerate this behavior.

Update on Cesar E. Chavez & Texas History Book Situation
Via: Joce;yn Sherman, UFW INterenet Communications Manager

We want to thank all the UFW supporters who sent e-mails to the Texas State Board of Education and told them not to erase Cesar Chavez and Hispanic historical figures from public school text books. Your response was overwhelming with more than 11,000 people taking action in a week and has made a huge difference. Board Chairman Gail Lowe indicated at the start of the January 14th hearing that Chavez will not be removed from the standards in elementary and high school. Please note that no decision, including Cesar's inclusion, is final until the State Board votes in March. We will be in contact with you soon with an update and may ask for your further assistance.
Thank you again for all your support!
