Petco Park, East Village Area

Alpha Phi Alpha - National Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade

Join us at Petco Park on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. for the 30th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. This is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States. Our parade is filled with dazzling floats, soulful High School Bands, Drill Teams, Colleges, Fraternities, Churches, Organizations, Peace and Youth groups.

This parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest Black fraternity in America, founded in 1906. The seven men who founded this organization at Cornell University in New York recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. Dr. King was also an Alpha.

Come and join thousands of others and help continue the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday, January 16th at 10:00 a.m. For more information or to participate, contact Bob Matthews, 619-264-0542.

San Diego Faithful Participate in MLK, Jr. National Day of Service

Congregants from different faiths working together to improve Balboa Park and community relations around the world.

Expanding their efforts from last year, leaders at First United Methodist Church of San Diego, the Islamic Center of San Diego, and Congregation Beth Israel will join together with the Chinmaya Mission, Temple Emanu-El and other faith communities in the National Day of Service in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, January 18, 2010, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m., leaders and members of  Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim congregations will help beautify a San Diego community treasure, Balboa Park.  The group will be working outdoors, clearing and hauling brush, mulching and planting. Afterwards, we will share in a bring-your-own picnic on the lawn.

This remarkable event will bring together people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds for a wonderful morning of hands-on community service, fun and camaraderie for all ages.

Last year, over 200 volunteers from Muslim, Jewish and Christian congregations-and from the community at large-gathered as a part of this effort.  Clearing brush, removing invasive plants and planting new trees, the volunteer force ranged in age from young children to seniors, and included a diversity of races, faiths and cultures.

Anyone is invited to join in this Day of Service; volunteers are encouraged to register at http://www.fumcsd.org/KingDay
