SAN DIEGO SPEAKS, a series of community meetings designed to hear suggestions and recommendations from the public to help address the City's $200 million budget deficit, will continue on:

DATE CHANGE
Tuesday, December 8, 2009 @ 6:00 p.m.
Joe &Vi Jacobs Center. 404 Euclid Avenue

On Wednesday, October 21, 2009, Mayor Sanders appeared before the Budget and Finance Committee and laid out his timeline for having city departments' present recommendations to him to cut their budgets by 27%.  Reductions of this scale could mean layoffs and reduction in the city's core services such as public safety, parks and libraries. Councilmembers and the Mayor unanimously supported having the public provide recommendations and suggestions for the Mayor and Council prior to December 15, 2009. Your input and participation is vital. I look forward to hearing from you at SAN DIEGO SPEAKS.

A book written with Kilina Vela's Memoirs with help from my dad Estevan Vela.

This is a novel about Kilina Vela, which takes place over a three year period after an untimely accident takes the life of her father. Written mostly as a memoir, it's partly fact but mostly an imaginary story of a girl and the people who make n impact on her life. The story take s place during her college years, but flashbacks give us a brief history of her family and how she has arrived where she is in present day Chula Vista, California. In addition, there are chapters that are solely dedicated to her thoughts on immigration, war, national service, friendship and spirituality-as well as how words are used to inspire, intimidate, and otherwise manipulate people. Along the way she sites famous people (e.g. Maya Angelou, Janet Attwood, Fannie Flagg and Winston Churchill) and numerous other characters that make her laugh and cry. Ultimately, Kilina decides to become a teacher, like her dad, so that she can fulfill a lifelong dream of giving back to her community and completing her dad's legacy.

Border Communties Count-Census 2010

Frontera Asset Building Network has launched a Census 2010 campaign - Border Communities Count - to ensure that the southwest Border region is counted accurately, justly and completely.  Check out our website for more information.

The 2010 U.S. Census is an important moment for those living in Southwest Border communities.  Counting every resident, regardless of immigration status, is vital because each person counted translates into federal funding over the next ten years.  Accurate counting is also related to voting rights and potential economic development and community infrastructure because many of the decisions made around these issues include some census measures.

Here's how you can get involved and help ensure that your community is fully counted:
  1. Join FABN's campaign and sign up for our E-news.
  2. Become a Partner Organization with the Census Bureau.
  3. Join or help form a local Complete Count Committee with the US Census.
  4. Download our fact sheet and learn more.
  5. Attend one of FABN's regional meetings to discuss ways to increase the Census count in your community. Check our website for upcoming dates.
  6. Apply for a Census Outreach Small Grant from FABN for community outreach to ensure a full count in communities at risk of undercounting.

For more information and to get involved please contact us or visit our webpage.
