About the Station Tavern By Derrik Chinn SIGNONSANDIEGO STAFF WRITER
Back in the '20s, trolleys en route from Golden Hill to downtown used to stop at the triangular lot at the corner of Fern and Ivy. So when piecing together his house of burgers, spuds and suds, it made sense for Sam Chammas to run with the train theme, much like he did with the neighboring Whistle Stop. Architect Lloyd Russell reflected that in his design as much as possible, from the building's triangular shape that resembles a train station to the pieces of original track that trim the property. More mentionable as far as design is concerned are the solar panels atop the tower. Aside from the fact that they generate 30 kilowatts daily -- a third of the electricity needed to power the coolers. Simple cookout cuisine served on tin trays and paper plates sums up the menu. Nubby burgers of ground chuck, turkey, black bean and chickpea varieties taste like something your dad would have cooked on the grill, and sides consist mainly of spuds, be it French, garlic, sweet potato or tater tot. Seating is half indoors, half out. A fleet of communal picnic tables fill the spacious yard, one of which is 20 feet long is referred to as "the Viking Table." That, along with the backyard food, feeds into the illusion that you're at extended family reunion with a bunch of relatives you barely know, strangers of a similar genre. Or at a kid-friendly beer garden. You pick.

2009 Television Writers Program
Deadline Approaching

The deadline for applications for the 2009 Television Writers Program presented by the National Latino Media Council is September 14. Don't miss the opportunity to apply for this exciting program.

Writing sample must be postmarked by September 14.

This program is not for beginners. It is for writers who can write at least a one half-hour comedy or a one-hour dramatic television script in English within a five-week period of time. The program will take place in Los Angeles, CA from November 7 to December 12.

Each participant is expected to complete at least one script by the end of the five-week session, which will then be read by network executives. Those writers whose scripts show promise will be interviewed and mentored by the network executives with the idea of placing them on a show. Nine of our writers from previous sessions have already been placed.

A stipend of $250 per week will be given to each participant.

To download program application and release forms, please visit http://www.nhmc.org/documents/Writers_Program/WP09.pdf

Family Day in The Park
10:00am to 3:00pm
Balboa Park
6th Avenue and Laurel Street South Lawn

Family Day in the Park is a community effort presented by the Commission on Children, Youth and Families to promote safe and healthy families. The anticipated attendance for this free event is 3,500. The event will have a host of free activities for children ages birth to 12 years of age and provide free resources and information for parents and caregivers to help them through these challenging economic times.

When stressors are high and resources are few, families can come and spend a day laughing and playing together, creating positive interactions and strengthening their relationships. This provides a free educational event that is fun and entertaining for both children and their parents.

We will have capacity for 100 booths at this event.  Although there is not a cost to host a booth, each agency/business will be required to host a free family friendly activity for the duration of the event. All activities must be pre-approved by the Commission.

The booth registration deadline is September 30, 2009.   If you have not already registered, please click the below link and register today.
