Keep youth engaged in the streets for all the right reasons! Recent funding cuts have left thousands of youth without meaningful activities in after-school hours. Supporting Excel Youth Zone gives youth a free activity to learn, create and work in the community to help solve many local problems. This year make the news of youth in the streets a positive one.

Help America Achieve Broadband Access for All

In the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), President Obama and Congress appropriated an unprecedented $7.2 billion in funds to expand broadband access to unserved and underserved communities across the United States. The current grant round includes $200 million for digital literacy training and outreach to vulnerable populations.

The Department of Commerce is seeking expert reviewers to help ensure that these funds are well invested for our future.  We are looking for a time commitment of approximately 20 hours between mid August and mid September.

We are particularly looking for reviewers with the following:
*  Experience reviewing grant applications from nonprofit and
public agencies,
*  Expertise in Education, Health Care, Disability Access, Economic
and Workforce Development, Libraries, Human and Social Services and/or Affordable Housing
*  Experience with outreach to targeted vulnerable populations,
including: Children / Youth, Senior Citizens, Disabled, Low Income Communities of Color, Native Americans, Immigrant Communities, Non English Speaking.
Specific technical expertise is not required, rather an understanding of how broadband access can enable historically marginalized communities to fully participate in the 21st century economy and society.

To apply to be a reviewer, please send a resume and a signed Conflict of Interest Interest/Confidentiality certification (available at
www.broadbandusa.gov) to BTOPReviewers@ntia.doc.gov

Fiesta con los padres
A Grand Fiesta
6th Annual Fiesta Con Los Padres

On August 1st, Padres fans enjoyed a grand Fiesta at PETCO Park. The sixth annual Fiesta con los Padres, presented by Welk Resorts and brought to you by 99.7 La Invasora, was a night of music and fun for the entire family.

Before the game, as they entered with their free "Padres Beisbol" t-shirts, fans enjoyed the vibrant moves of Ballet Folklrico en Aztln on the Field Level Concourse. As they walked toward the Park at the Park, they could hear and smell the Fiesta Village - Latino music, Sonoran-style hot dogs and other foods, margaritas, and salsa dance lessons courtesy of Caf Sevilla. A children's area featured a Bounce House, face-painter, and maraca-decorating table and all fans could get free autographs from duranguense group K-Paz de la Sierra, Padres broadcasters Juan Avila and Eduardo Ortega, and TV anchors from KGTV and Azteca America.

A special pre-game ceremony included a performance by youth dancers from Balboa Park's House of Puerto Rico and a tribute to the memory of Mr. Preston Gomez. Gomez's family was on hand to receive a framed photo of the 1969 Padres in honor of his becoming the first Padres manager and first Latin American-born manager in Major League Baseball history.

After a stirring 4-2 Padres victory extended the team's win streak to five games, fans packed the Park at the Park once again. After being introduced by Ortega and 99.7 La Invasora's Don Pepo, K-Paz de la Sierra entertained with a high-energy post-game concert. It was an evening of celebration and fun and if you missed it, we'll see you next year!
