Mark Your Calendars: Rotarians At Work Day, April 25, 2009

Mark you calendars!  Rotarians At Work (RAW)  Day is Saturday April, 25th! The Rotary Club of Southeast San Diego has planned one of the biggest projects in the District and we need EVERYONE to participate.

Rotarians At Work Day was started right here in our District by Past Governor Bob Watson.  Bob had a dream of every Rotarian/Club around the world ( that's over 1 million Rotarians/36,000 Clubs)  showing  their commitment to Rotary's philosophy of "Service Above Self" by going out into their local communities and performing hands-on projects on the same day. Below you'll find information on the history of Rotarians At Work Day and I've also attached a general flyer for this years event.

Typically, Rotary Clubs quietly work "behind" the scene and don't often get opportunities to be visible in the community. This event not only gives Rotarians an opportunity to get their "hands dirty" and work on projects important to the community they serve but because of the huge # of projects going on the same day and the # of Rotarians involved a tremendous amount of attention/interest is generated.  The positive message  this event sends about the importance of giving back and Rotary's commitment to "Service Above Self" benefits the Club by bringing awareness to our Club and the work we do. To make sure we capture the communities attention huge Rotarians At Work banners will be placed at each site and volunteers will be wearing RAW t-shirts.....it will be hard to miss us!

Our Club has partnered with several other Clubs and will be working on the following projects.  Here's some general information:

Paradise Canyon Clean-Up Coordinated w/ the City of San Diego Park/Rec. Dept. (25 Volunteers)-Paradise Canyon is directly behind Morse High School. Our RYLA students from Morse and other students they are recruiting will team up with the members of the Cathedral High School Interact Club from Del Mar to clear the trash and debris from the canyon. The main focus is to clean up the canyon but by teaming the RYLA students with the Cathedral High Interact members we're hoping to reinforce what they learned at RYLA, create an opportunity for them to talk to and maybe influence the other students that have not been involved in the program.  Cleo Amarillas will be the project leader at this site.

Baker Elementary School Clean Up  Coordinated w/ the San Diego Unified School District (25 Volunteers):We are partnering with the La Jolla New Generations Club who will take the lead on this project.  The task list includes: Organizing the books in the resource area, clearing weeds around the campus, painting 16 planter boxes used by each grade to plant vegetables and power washing the outside lunch area.

Balboa Elementary School Clean Up  Coordinated by the San Diego Unified School District (25 Volunteers): The Southeast Club will take the lead on this project.  The task list includes: 2 volunteers to work with the school librarian to file books, clearing weeds from around the school perimeter, washing down the playground equipment, power-washing the lunch area and 4-6 volunteers assigned to do general clean up of the auditorium.

Knox Elementary School Clean Up Coordinated by the San Diego Unified School District  (25 Volunteers): The Southeast Club will take the lead on this project using volunteers from the Del Mar Club. The task list includes:  Clearing weeds around the campus, trimming 3 small buses, cutting back ice plant growing thru the fence and power washing the lunch area.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  All projects will be completed by noon.
We will forward more details as we get closer to the date.  Until then, we're counting on each member to participate, spread the word and recruit their family members, neighbors, friends etc. to join us in showing the community what "Service Above Self" is all about. You can also e-mail dcsandiego@yahoo.com for more information.

History of Rotarians At Work Day

In 1911, Rotarians enthusiastically adopted the motto "Service Above Self" because it so aptly articulated the ideals that the fledgling organization was in the process of developing. Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, selected this theme for 2005-2006. For 95 years, this motto served as the underlying motif of our efforts to carry out humanitarian service, promote high ethical standards, and work for international understanding and peace. As with anything that has become an innate part of our lives, it is easy to take this motto for granted.

Through the vision of Past District Governor Bob Watson from District 5340, every Rotarian in the world has the opportunity to renew our commitment to this timeless message of compassion and generosity of spirit by participating in Rotarians At Work Day. April 29, 2006, each of the 60 clubs within his District came forward and identified one or more projects that they performed. Indeed, several clubs chose two or more projects because of the diversity of their members. Many clubs partnered with other clubs including those in Mexico, and nearly all of the clubs integrated other groups to assist such as Rotaract Clubs, Interact Clubs and the Family of Rotary.

Rotarians planted trees, performed much needed maintenance to our communities' highways, senior centers, a variety of public buildings such as schools, parks and even the facility which hosts RYLA each year. In Mexico Rotarians did maintenance at a medical mission, built a new school kitchen and computer lab, undertook a literacy project, implemented various public health programs including building prostheses for the needy. Some clubs hosted those less fortunate and provided clothes, books and meals. All in one day!

The vision of PDG Bob is infectious. Thanks to the leadership of PDG Fernando Favela, Rotarians south of the border in District 4100 performed their own Rotarios Trabajando on April 29th. In addition, District 5340's Group Study Exchange teams to East and West Africa participated in service projects that day on the other side of the world. One Rotarian was in Iraq that day and donned a Rotarian At Work shirt to clear land mines.
In 2007, more Districts across the Rotary World participated to help this project grow. At this point in time, there are at least 14 Districts spanning 8 countries have agreed to participate in the coming years.
Imagine the result when 32,000+ clubs around the world bring together members on Rotarians At Work Day to perform a variety of hands-on community service projects. One cannot help but be awed by our potential. We cannot begin to speculate how many hundreds, maybe thousands, of people who will benefit, both directly and indirectly, from our one-day efforts. The sense of accomplishment and empowerment to those in need will be astounding.

While you will be selflessly serving others, you will be concurrently raising your Club's standing and prominence within your community. What a great way to reenergize your club, attract new members and retain those who may be searching for something new. With a Rotary project, there is something for everyone to do!

Can you think of a better legacy for your Rotary Club and your District?
