We need Hispanic/Latino males to fill out a survey!
I am working on a research project at UCSD, which consists of validating psychosocial instruments for Hispanic/Latino men. We are recruiting males of Hispanic/Latino origin to complete a written survey, which takes about 20-40 minutes to complete.
If you are Hispanic/Latino, speak English, Spanish, or both and are over 21 years of age, we invite your assistance with this community-wide effort and hope you will consider filling out a survey for this valuable study. If you are interested in participating, please make contact with us.
Since minority groups are underrepresented in most phases of research, it is essential that you participate in our study to scientifically prove the efficacy of psychosocial instruments with Latinos. With greater representation of minority groups in research studies, the Latino community as a whole stands to gain access to better evaluated health care interventions. Your help is greatly appreciated!

All Hands on Deck to Fight Cancer!
I'm excited to announce that California Division CEO David Veneziano is calling for "all hands on deck" to recruit a total of 2500 new Relay For Life teams during the Team Blitz running January 25 through February 25 with a goal of ultimately helping Relay raise $35 million by end of fiscal year!
We are encouraging all volunteers and staff to commit to recruiting new teams. In fact, each staff member has been asked to recruit five new team captains. I would like to ask for your support in this undertaking. As leaders within the Society, your efforts to recruit teams will serve as an example to and foster a sense of grassroots mobilization within the ranks of the organization.
In hard economic times, when many cancer patients and their families are facing diminished finances and rising health care costs, the Society's free programs, services and information are needed more than ever. However, in this economic environment, raising the funds to support such programs and services can be challenging. People are prioritizing their spending and giving less. One way to meet the urgent need of patients, survivors and caregivers is simply this: to ask more people for support.
Please visit www.relayforlife.org/california to learn more about the Team Blitz, get information to help you recruit teams and bring the American Cancer Society's spirit of Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. to communities throughout California.

Support the newly formed, *Coalition for Justice in Palestine -- San Diego*
Last Monday more than 100 of you attended an ASD co-sponsored forum on Gaza and Palestine. Marjorie Cohen's presentation delineated the war crimes in the conflict, especially those of the Israeli military in its collective retribution against the unarmed Gaza populous. She urged us to mobilize against the massive US military aid, which supports the aggression. Nasser Barghouti of the ADC presented an analysis of the boycott movement against the apartheid regime in South Africa and a proposal to launch a similar boycott movement against Israeli goods. While efforts are underway nationally and internationally to launch a boycott, we were urged to pressure local stores in San Diego to reject Israeli-made goods until the occupation ends. We circulated petitions to inform merchants of our goals. We'd like to count on your participation. The desperate plight of the Palestinian people, particularly those locked in the Gaza strip, calls on all of us to devote some time to pressure the Obama administration to take a new course towards peace in the Middle East. We encourage all who read this ASD newsletter to consider supporting or participating in the newly formed, *Coalition for Justice in Palestine -- San Diego*. This new coalition is meeting twice a month on Sundays (next meeting on Sun. Feb. 7^th @ 11am), but its meeting dates may change in the near future. If you would like to be informed about the meeting dates or support the work, please contact ASD at info@ActivistSanDiego.org

City Budget Input Needed
Council Actions: Councilman Young launches
"San Diego Speaks" Public Input on City budget priorities
On Tuesday, January 27, 2009 the San Diego City Council unanimously approved my recommendations to convene additional community meetings of the City's Budget and Finance Committee. "San Diego Speaks" is for you!
In recognition of the City's budget deficit of over $50 million in 2009 and if economic trends continue, over $100 million in 2010, I called for the public to come before the Budget and Finance Committee and tell the City Council what city services are a priority to you, what ideas you have for cost savings in city services, what city services you could possibly do with less of, and what city services you may be willing to pay for. I will be joined by members of the Budget and Finance Committee and Mayor Sanders at the evening and Saturday community meetings beginning
February 4, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Center For Neighborhood Innovation
404 Euclid Avenue.
Community Budget and Finance Committee meetings will also be held on:
Saturday February 14th at 9:00 a.m.
Mira Mesa Library
8405 New Salem Street
Saturday February 21st at 9:00 a.m.
Hoover High School Auditorium 4474 El Cajon Blvd.
Thursday, February 26th at 6:00 p.m.
(meeting placeto be announced)
"San Diego Speaks" is on the agenda for every Budget and Finance Committee meeting and provides an opportunity for any individual, group, or organization to present their ideas and suggestions to the Council. Please call my office at 236-6644 for additional information on location, dates and times of all Committee meetings.

Register Now for Marriage Lobby Day in Sacramento
Join thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians and our allies on Tuesday, February 17 when we will gather at the Capitol with one goal: to overturn Proposition 8 by sharing our stories about why we ALL deserve the freedom to marry. It's democracy in action.
Not only will we be raising awareness to overturn Prop 8, but we'll also be urging our state legislators to pass SR 7 (Leno) and HR 5 (Ammiano), two resolutions that will make it official state policy that fundamental rights should not be taken away from minority groups at the ballot box, and initiatives like Prop 8 should not stand.
There will be a whole day of activities -- from speakers and lobbying training in the morning to a rally, action stations and lobby visits in the afternoon.
Register by February 12 to reserve your space. The event is free and open to all who wish to attend -- so bring your friends!
