Scene 1:Long ago in the land of Tlallilived a young boy named Ollin. He was called Ollin because a small earthquake had shaken his homeland on the day he was born, and Ollin meant earthquake. It also meant movement, so it was an especially fine name for a runner so swift as Ollin. He was only eleven years old, but was known to all as the boy who could run like the wind. Ollin was tall and thin for his age and had deep dark black eyes that shone like obsidian beads.  His long black hair was adorned by a beaded headband given to him by his grandfather.  He was a happy boy whose warm brown face always sparkled with a smile.

Scene 2: The Tlamatini was an old man with long, gray hair.  His deep brown face was etched with many lines.  People said that each line on his face was won by a lesson he had learned. (the Tlamatini) was a small, thin man lifting a clay jug out of the cold, clear water.

Scene 3: "I am the guardian of Mictlan," roared a deep, hoarse voice.  I am Mictlantekwtli, the lord of the land of the dead!"  Mictlantekwtli was a tall, thin figure with a skull face and ghastly white skin that sagged from his bony body.  He wore a crown of metal plates and carried a giant bone scepter.

What is Strategic Restructuring?
In this time of economic hardship and uncertainty, nonprofits increasingly look to their fellow organizations for collaborations, alliances and even mergers. What is the range of partnerships available to nonprofits, and what are organizations around the country doing to counter the weak economy? Identifying and overcoming typical roadblocks and challenges, David La Piana is founder and President of La Piana Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in solutions to the strategic issues faced by nonprofit organizations and their funders. In this workshop, David La Piana will explain:
The spectrum of partnership opportunities, including mergers, joint ventures, andadministrative consolidations.
Assessing an organization's readiness for strategic restructuring.
"Key success factors" in mergers and other alliances.
David coined the term "strategic restructuring" to refer to the continuum of partnership configurations-including mergers, joint ventures, consolidations, and joint programming-through which nonprofits attempt to anticipate or respond to environmental threats and opportunities. He works closely with major foundations and national nonprofits to promote an understanding of strategic restructuring and the effective use of nonprofit boards of directors.
