Stop Bush from taking Away Farm Worker Protections
Stop Bush Admin. From Gutting Farm Worker Protections E-Mail the Department of Labor TODAY!
We expect the Bush administration's Department of Labor to shortly announce new guestworker (H2A) regulations. These regulations, if adopted, will gut existing protections for both domestic and foreign farmworkers and represent a huge step backwards in protecting the hardworking people who put the food on our table. The regulations will lower farmworker wages, make it easier for local workers to be discriminated against in hiring, and harder for farm workers to obtain decent housing Numerous recent media reports document how the Bush Administration is making a last minute push to get these and other horrible regulations our before he leaves office. Please join us in telling the Department of Labor's Assistant Secretary for Policy, Leon R. Sequeira not to issue these revised regulations. The American people spoke loudly on November 4th and said they had enough with the Bush Administration's anti-worker, anti-immigrant policies. Tell the Department of Labor to allow Congress and the next administration to address these issues.

Museum of Man exhibit: "Beyond a Reasonable Drought: Water and Culture in a Changing Climate"
On Exhibit Through January 11, 2009
Beyond Reasonable Drought, a new exhibition that opened July 12, examines the ways in which culture and climate are intimately connected today as they always have been. People of the arid Southwest, for example, have always had an intimate relationship with water. Periods of drought have inspired people throughout time to innovate ways of dealing with dwindling water resources. Like their predecessors, people today must face the consequences of impending water shortages that will affect various residential, commercial, and agricultural interests. Contemplating the relationship between culture and climate prompts some compelling questions: Will contemporary projected water shortages be felt more severely than those experienced by indigenous peoples who inhabited San Diego in the past? What can ancient residents of the Southwest teach us about the relationship between culture and water conditions? How did earlier inhabitants of southern California adapt to climate change?
Beyond Reasonable Drought: Water and Culture in a Changing Climate is now open on the Main Floor.

NLRC Holiday Food Drive The National Latino Research Center is conducting a holiday food drive from November 10th to December 18th. The purpose of the food drive is to provide food, blankets, and toys for farmworkers in North San Diego County. The farmworker community struggles to stay warm during the winter. This year's winter has been forecasted to be much colder than in the past and, due to the fires from last October, local farmworker families have fewer resources to defend themselves against the cold.We are hoping to make the holiday season more manageable and cheerful for farmworkers.
