This Upcoming Weeks Presentation:
Community Development through Community Ownership Speaker: George A. Harris III, Director of Community Ownership - Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation
This weeks presentation will focus on Community Ownership as it relates to the work of the Jacobs Center 1) as a philosophy, 2) as a community building strategy, and 3) as an asset-building strategy
George A. Harris III is the Director of Community Ownership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (JCNI), a nonprofit operating foundation located in southeastern San Diego California. JCNI describes its business as "the resident ownership of neighborhood change". George works with residents of the Diamond Neighborhoods in southeastern San Diego to develop strategies for community residents to gain financial ownership of the assets developed by JCNI. In 2006 under George's leadership, JCNI completed the nation's first Community Development Initial Public Offering, where community residents and stakeholders purchased a 40% ownership share in Market Creek Plaza, a 10 acre commercial and cultural center located in the heart of the Diamond Neighborhoods. George is native of Richmond, California, and is a graduate of The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and The George Washington University Law School in Washington D.C.

Southeast San Diego Launches its Annual Dictionary Project! For the past 35 years, the Rotary Club of South East San Diego has been working purposefully to help improve the educational experience of students at a number of schools in the South East community. In recent years the Club has provided dictionaries for 3rd-grade students at 12 schools in the community. To date, more than 5,000 dictionaries have been distributed by the Rotary Club. This year the Club's goal is to expand the program to include ALL 32 schools in the community. Distribution to 12 schools is under way and will be completed in early November. Generous contributions from local companies and individuals throughout the community provide the funding for the program. The cost of each dictionary is $5.00 but a donation of $150.00 donation will cover the cost for a single class of approx. 30 students. Donors contributing $150.00 or more will be identified on the inside cover of each book and willhave the opportunity to select the campus that will received this valuable gift.
