Greetings!

I hope that each of you had the opportunity this past holiday weekend to spend time with your families and rest. For our family it was a very blessed thanksgiving as we had much to be thankful for with the arrival of Dahlia (our new baby girl) this last month. She continues to be a healthy baby making sure mommy and daddy get as little sleep as possible.

Are you ready to party? The Valderama family of National City invites you to celebrate their daughter's quinceaera (sweet fifteen coming-of-age party).

Patriarch Eduardo has returned home from Mexico with unexplained riches after a ten year absence that began the day his daughter Sonora turned 15. Sweet 15 pits father against daughter, wife and grandmother in the midst of superstar singers and dancers in a very funny and interactive comedy.

Working Under The Gun
It's Not Just an Expression

Workers of Starrh and Starrh Cotton Growers--a large cotton, hay, and almond producer in California-need your help. They need you to e-mail Cal OSHA immediately and tell them to investigate the violations at the ranch right away and prosecute the company to the fullest extent of the law. When you hear what the workers' lives are like, you will be horrified...and furious. Please take a moment to help these workers by sending your e-mail today!

"I have been working for Starrh and Starrh for five years", Alejandro Gil told us. "The working conditions are awful. We are exposed to a lot of dust and we do not have any protection. In the last two or three days, I have been feeling a pain in my chest and my back when I breathe...The owner's brother-in-law always puts pressure on workers. He wants more production. The brother-in-law always carries a gun on his waist to scare workers."

"We never had bathrooms, fresh water or water to wash our hands. Sometimes we do not get any breaks. They put a lot of pressure on us to work faster. When I helped them packing hay, I worked up to 16 hours without breaks." said Gerardo Negrete. "I am a sprayer and they do not give us what we need to protect ourselves from the chemicals. I have sprayed [pesticide] without gloves, masks or overalls. They only give those to us when we are close to roads where maybe some inspectors can see us...The foremen make fun of us for not having the protection we need."

Francisco Villasaa, another 20-year employee, reports, "The foreman is abusive. Not only does he humiliate us, but he also does not provide us with fresh water--he actually drinks our water."

Listening to these workers makes you wonder if we've stepped into a time warp. Really, how can this happen in 2007?

There are laws that say that workers need breaks for meals and to rest. There are laws that say that workers must have clean water to drink, and protection from sun and extreme heat. There are laws that say that workers must have bathrooms--for their own health--and that of the consumers who eat the food that comes from those fields.

Please send an e-mail to Cal OSHA--the agency responsible for protecting farm workers and enforcing these laws--and tell them to investigate these violations immediately and prosecute the company to the fullest extent of the law.

SDIRC Continued Call for Donations

In the aftermath of the fires, as the weather turns cold, thousands of individuals, many of them immigrants, are still struggling to survive. Some have lost their homes and many more have lost their jobs--they were the farmworkers in the fields that burned or the nannies, lawn care workers, or day laborers who earned their living in the houses and neighborhoods that no longer exist. Many of them are unwilling or unable to access "official" relief resources out of fear that they will be subject to immigration inspections, will not be able to communicate with relief workers, or will be humiliated. Instead, they are turning to the community organizations they know for help.

The San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium calls for continued donations to the Fire Fund managed by the Foundation for Change. The Fund is focused on vulnerable populations and makes grants every two weeks to the grassroots and community-based organizations that are getting these populations the supplies, services, and information they need. We anticipate that vulnerable communities will be in crisis survival mode for at least another two months.

Donations can be made by going to the the Foundation for Change or through the SDIRC updated website at www.immigrantsandiego.org . Any and all contributions are appreciated!

Ongoing Advocacy

Following the release of our report (available on our website), representatives of SDIRC met with the San Diego Police Chief to express our concerns about the treatment of vulnerable populations during the fires. The Chief informed us that the Mayor's office will be issuing a report by the end of the year to review alleged shortcomings and make recommendations for moving forward. The US Department of Justice, Special Investigations Unit, Office of Civil Rights has contacted us and is conducting its own preliminary inquiry of possible police misconduct.

In addition to the police, SDIRC representatives have communicated their concerns to the Sheriff's Office, Red Cross, and other entities engaged in emergency response and relief during the fires. The challenge now will be to pursue changes in our response system to ensure that in the next disaster, vulnerable populations are protected and secure.

On behalf of the more than 25 organizations that make up SDIRC, thank you for your support during the fires and for your continued support!

Andrea Guerrero
SDIRC Chair
