Play with your food
The childhood obesity case is about to get cracked!
The Incredible Adventures of the Amazing Food Detective is a fun and free interactive, online video game for kids aged 9 to 10 that teaches healthy eating and activity habits. Congress is currently working on setting the funding levels for many important programs for people with diabetes. Earlier this year, the U.S. House of Representatives approved giving the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention additional funding for the Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT). When the Senate passed their version of this bill last week, it included a lower number. As the two now reconcile the differences between their bills, we need your help to ask the Senate to agree to the higher number.
Ask your Senators to support increasing the funding for diabetes management and prevention!
Funding for DDT helps communities thrive by translating medical research into practices and programs that can be used in local communities to help those at-risk prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. These results have led to healthier lives for the people reached by this program. Currently, DDT only has the capability to fund 28 of the 50 state diabetes prevention and control programs at a base level. The co-chairs of the Senate Diabetes Caucuses have sent a letter to their colleagues asking for support to increase the funding for DDT by an additional $4.35 million.
You can help by sending a letter to your members of Congress and ask him or her to sign-on to the "Dear Colleague" letter from the Senate Diabetes Caucus. The Dear Colleague letter will send a strong message that additional money for DDT is vital for people with diabetes.
Please click here now and ask your U.S. Senators to sign-on to the "Dear Colleague" letter from the Diabetes Caucus.

The National Organization for Mexican American Rights Toy Drive
(NOMAR)
A national non-profit organization established for the purpose of promoting and defending the civil rights of Americans of Hispanic Origin, and their right to equal employment opportunities.
NOMAR, North Island Hispanic Association (NIHA) and the Breezin Band will be hosting its 14th Annual Christmas Toy Drive on Friday, November 16, 2007. Doors open at approxatemately 4:00 PM, at the Barrio Station, located at 2175 Newton Avenue, San Diego, 92113.
This annual event is for the children of the Barrio. The Barrio Station identifies 600 youths in desperate need of a gift, while providing them with a positive uplifting and surprise. These children are from families that are either experiencing financial difficulty, low income, or are just going through an unfortunate year. Although the actual toy presentation doesn't happen until mid December, the "toy team" over the years has realized the real effort is in the time needed to prepare for the actual distribution. The reality is; after our function, toys are sorted by age group and gender, gift-wrapped and organized for distribution. Additional toys are purchased for those age groups or gender not represented in our initial collections. The barrio station does provide the administration of the distribution and the eligibility paperwork. Needless to say this effort takes well over a month!
Your part is just to participate. Please do not bring toys associated with weaponry or violence. Please bring new, unwrapped toys for children between the ages of 6 and 12 years of age, encouraging education, sports and family entertainment. Tax-deductible monetary contributions are also welcome in the form of cash, check or money order. Checks payable to: NOMAR-Toys. Send checks to:
NOMAR Marlow Martinez
PO BOX 180283 OR 1414 Oakpoint Ave.
Coronado, CA. 92178-0283 Chula Vista, CA. 91913
The toy drive is free, no admission charge. Entertainment will be provided by the Breezin Band (8:30-11:00) and a DJ "TBD" (starting at 4pm till?). Bring your dancing shoes and enjoy an evening with "special taco dinners by Bea and friends" (4:30 till sold out). This is a fundraiser, private party, and Happy Hour for all those that would like to participate in a worthy cause and share in the spirit of giving. All guests should be over 21 years of age, please no children. Secured parking is available.
For more information on volunteer work, ideas, silent auctions, raffle donations, partnerships, or anything else related to this charity event, please contact me, Marlow Martinez, at: home: 619-656-2856, cell: 246-0665, work: 619-767-7438, e-mail: MARLOW.MARTINEZ@NAVY.MIL or MARLOW.MARTINEZ@SBCGLOBAL.NET
The Barrio Station is annually listed in the United Way/CFC distribution guide, agency number #6105. Established in 1970, providing support services which include; prevention, early intervention, juvenile diversion, crises intervention, scholarships, youth counseling, recreational and educational activities and client assistance.
We need your help and support. So please spread the word. One gift or monetary contribution can make a difference to a child in need. Mark your calendars for this special event and bring a friend! Directions to the Barrio Station are as follows:
Interstate-5
Exit Caesar Chavez Parkway; go west two blocks towards the bay.
Turn left on Newton Avenue, go south towards the bridge, two blocks on the right, 2175 Newton Avenue
We look forward to seeing you on FRIDAY, November 16, 2007.
Respectfully,
Marlow Martinez

CALL ON THE U.S. SENATE TO PASS AgJOBS Congress must act to ensure that the agricultural industry has a stable work force and farmworkers are treated fairly
This week, the United States Senate is expected to vote on the Agricultural Job Opportunities, Benefits, and Security Act (AgJOBS) as an amendment to the Senate Farm Bill. AgJOBS provides a path to legal status and citizenship for farmworkers and guarantees a steady flow of labor for our nation's agricultural industry.
Now is the time for you to call your Senators! There are many anti-immigrant voices out there trying to block this legislation. We need you to call your Senators and urge them to strengthen the agricultural industry, protect our food supply, and support immigrant farmworkers.
WHAT IS AgJOBS?
AgJOBS provides two paths to legal status for farmworkers. First, AgJOBS offers currently undocumented farmworkers the opportunity to come out of the shadows and earn temporary legal status by meeting a past-work requirement in American agriculture. These farmworkers may later earn permanent immigration status and citizenship by meeting a future-work requirement of 3 to 5 additional years in the U.S. agriculture industry. Second, AgJOBS revises the H-2A visa program and would make it easier for seasonal laborers to work legally in the U.S.
WHY THIS BILL IS IMPORTANT
Over 50% of farmworkers are undocumented. These workers, like other undocumented immigrants, live in constant fear of being deported and separated from their families. AgJOBS, the product of years of careful negotiation, is supported by farmers, farmworker organizations and members of Congress from both parties. Congress must act now to protect America's vital and vulnerable farmworker population.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Contact both of your U.S. Senators and tell them:
"Please vote for the AgJOBS to the Farm bill and support the farmworkers that help feed this nation."
Contact both your U.S. Senators TODAY by calling the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
Your phone calls make a BIG difference, and every phone call counts. Tell your Senators that you support AgJOBS! |
Dear friends, I hope that this message finds you and your loved ones in good health and spirits.
Perhaps you could forward this email to anyone who you think might be interested in supporting our efforts to help the impoverished Oaxacan Mixtec people who live in the Colonia Pedregal de Santa Julia in Tijuana.
We will be visiting that community on Saturday, November 17. We will meet in Parking Lot E (which is next to the Children's Center and in front of Parking Structure 6) at 9:00 a.m. on November 17. My guess is that we will be there for about 2 hours and thus ready to start back for San Diego at around noon. The border crossing has taken about 2 hours the few times I've gone.
The teacher at the Mixtec school in Tijuana and I spoke via phone recently and we want to help them with three things:
a. Supplying 50 boxes for needy families with beans, rice, cooking oil, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, etc. b. Building more classrooms (will require donations of cement, sand, gravel, lumber, etc.) as the school is overcrowded. The people there are very aware that education is the most effective path for improving their economic conditions and particularly want help with this construction so that the children might be educated under better circumstances. c. Obtaining double cataract surgery for a Oaxacan who's about 60 and wants to be able to see again. The surgery will cost about $2,000 and we can explore fundraising and/or having someone do it in the U.S. for a reduced fee.
Students who have participated in assisting the Mixtec community in the past have had a very positive experience and some have described it as "life-changing." There are many benefits to helping others but the best one is the knowledge that we are doing good of our own free will. In addition, folks report feeling more self-confidence, self-esteem, pride, compassion, motivation to help others, etc.
Please consider assisting us in this very important project through whatever means are available to you including calling upon family and friends for their support.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you so much for considering this heartfelt request. Much respect and affection, Jess

Friday, November 9, 2007, Hall of Champions, 12 Noon
Operating under Charter Article XV: Strong Mayor Trail Form of Governance it quickly became apparent there were a number of areas where clarification and fine-tuning were required to achieve the original intent of this voters reform to City governance.
The Mayor in cooperation with the City Attorney began work on many of those issues, but to fully prepare for the long-term implementation of Strong Mayor form of governance a timely review of the City Charter was needed. In January 2007, Mayor Sanders appointed a Citizen Charter Review Committee to determined:
1. What Charter modifications would be necessary to implement the Kroll recommendations and other financial reforms?
2. What would be the clear definition of the roles and responsibilities of elected officials and the separation of powers under strong mayor?
3. What measures would be needed to improve the functionality of strong mayor during this trail period?
4. What legislative tightening would be required for effective permanent implementation of Article XV?
The Citizens Charter Review Committee completed its work and issued a report which will now proceed for consideration by the City Council. Those matters could be placed before the voters in the June 2008 ballot.
