Muertos: A Day of the Dead Play

Global in its perspective and local in its lived experience, MUERTOS: A Day of the Dead Play, will conjure images of death with pageantry, whimsy and contemplation.  Through the journey of Carmen, a photography student, audiences will transcend images of crossing the great divide.  A celebration of life as we know it in the San Diego/Tijuana region. Resplendent in visual imagery, live music, song, and dance MUERTOS will stir your spirits.  A new work by resident playwright and director Evelyn Díaz Cruz and made possible with generous support from USD's Trans-Border Institute.

The Theatre Arts Program at the University of San Diego is excited to announce its season opening production of MUERTOS: A Day of the Dead Play, and to extend an invitation for your direct participation in the event this coming October 2007.  A unique aspect of this production will be our final scene, located just outside the Shiley Theatre in our constructed graveyard. We are inviting the community to apply to build an altar in this graveyard that would bring an issue of death to light.

We welcome your participation, energy and passion if you would like to construct an altar to the dead as part of the production's graveyard scene. Anyone with a heart and creativity is welcomed to participate.  Of special interest will be themes that reflect some aspect of death on the Mexico/U.S. border region.  Organizations that deal with some aspect of death are especially encouraged to apply.  We believe this to be a rare opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness of issues pertaining to death on the border
  • Privilege our inter-dependent Mexico/U.S. relationship
  • Celebrate our unique "glocal" (global & local) region
  • Build community by sharing information
  • Collectively mourn, reflect and celebrate

Participants will receive two complimentary tickets to the show MUERTOS and may be eligible for cash prizes. For more information and to receive the "Request to Participate Form," simply request one at theatrearts@sandiego.edu <mailto:theatrearts@sandiego.edu>   (e-mail is preferred) or you may contact the Administrative Coordinator of the Theatre Arts Program, Lori Fiori at 619-260-7934 with any questions. Feel free to share this letter with other interested parties.  For planning purposes, we request that you respond to this letter by August 10th 2007.

We look forward to seeing you as an audience member or community partner in our fall production of MUERTOS, celebrating death and life.

Thank you and best wishes,
Evelyn Díaz Cruz

Relay For Life of
Southeastern San Diego

July 21-22, 2007
Jackie Robinson YMCA

Relay For Life® is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in our community. At the event, we celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

But, Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another. During this event, we honor survivors during the Survivors Lap and we remember those we lost to cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony. We also celebrate life, friendship, and a chance to work together toward a cancer-free future.

Most importantly, Relay gives you the power to help in the fight against cancer. By joining together as volunteers and donors, our efforts help the American Cancer Society strive toward a future where cancer doesn't take the lives of our friends and family.

Sign up today to become a part of the Relay phenomenon. Together we will fuel the work - and the hope - that can help make a cancer-free future a reality.

LA VOZ is a  personal e-mail list that I have developed over the last 10 years. It consists of over 3000 contacts that include students, educators, elected officials & their representatives, media, organizers and activist, clergy, non-profit executive directors and professionals, and business leaders. The info sent out  includes community events, funding opportunities, scholarships, employment opportunities, some editorials, current politics & bills that need support, & volunteer opportunities. The e-mails sent out are done as a free service and are not connected to any particular organization. Most of the e-mails are San Diego based but are increasingly becoming more diverse in geographic origin and relevance. What I sent out is not meant to be partisan but since it is a private e-mail list I reserve the right to be selective on the items I send out in regards to electoral politics. LA VOZ is a volunteer project that I enjoy doing and my way of giving back to our community...I am passionate about connecting our community to resources and opportunities.
