ICE Raid in Vista: parents deported, four children left behind and in need of assistance

Hello Pedro,

I previously sent an email regarding a know your rights training in Vista to inform people about their human rights should the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE ) come to people's homes and violate their rights, due to an incident on Thur. June 21st. Now, I come to you and ask you to please help me pass the word out in seeking donations to help the four children that were left behind, after their parents were deported. Now, their aunt will be taking care of the four of them. Feel free to customize the email or let me know if I should write a brief recap and purpose of the message.

This Thursday morning, June 21, at 6 .m. agents ofImmigration Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) armed withassault rifles, raided the Vista Townsite home ofAlfredo Rodriguez and Adelina Nino and their fourchildren. The children range in age from the youngest,Abram, 1, and Sara, 2 1/2 to Yovani, 5, and Cristal,9. Attached is an eyewitness report from TinaJillings of the Coalition for Justice Peace andDignity which organizes residents in the VistaTownsite area:

This morning I witnessed for the first time an ICEraid. I happened right here in Townsite. I must behonest and say that I have never seen anything likethis except on television and watching this activityunfold live I must admit it is traumatizing. One canonly imagine what the families are going throughbecause of this horrible experience. This morning Iwitnessed a mother and father being taken from theirhome while their children stood by and watched. Thechildren ranging from ages 9 to 1 years old witnessedthe entire arrest and were horrified by the events. Ido not know if they understood that their lives wouldnever be same. They watched helplessly as theirlittle worlds were falling apart right in front oftheir face. The two oldest were crying hysterically,as far as the two younger ones go, one was in totalshock and unable to speak until about 45 minutes, andthe baby was clutching onto his Aunt. After theirparents were gone they began to sob and cry for theirmama y papi. The oldest child (Cristal, 9,) gave me adescription of what happened inside the home while wewere waiting outside. She said that early in themorning someone was pounding on their door. "Theyscreamed to open the door or they will knock it down".She said that they hid under the bed because theywere afraid, because this type of thing never happenedbefore. She said her father answered the door andthat the men began to scream at him "get down on thefloor or they will shoot him. " They all came out oftheir hiding places because the "Police/ICE guys weregoing throughout the house with guns and rifles drawn. They began to question all of them and eventuallythey took her Mom and Dad away. Their Aunt wascalled to collect the four children. I obtainedinformation from the Aunt and videotaped the aftermathof this operation.

The coalition for Justice Peace and Dignity is seeking monetary donations for this family that is in great economic need. The aunt will be taking care of the four children. Some of the items that are greatly needed are: diapers, clothes, and shoes. The one year old baby, was being breast feeded, but now his aunt has to look for the formula that he will be willing to drink. Monetary donations will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like more information, or have any questions, please contact Tina Jillings at (760) 828-5576 or Yesenia at (760) 468-4518, or you can email the Coalition for Justice Peace and Dignity at [email protected] to make a monetary donation, or feel free to contact me at [email protected]

dream
The Dreamers are in Washington DC and they need your support! Starting on June 13, Dreamers from Los Angeles, Tucson, San Antonio, Chicago, Toledo, Miami, Boston, New York and other cities rode the rails and arrived in Washington this week.  100 Dreamers.  1,000 stories.  Join them as they tell the story of who we are as a nation, a proud immigrant history.  Click here to get on the train.

The media has been picking this story up rapidly. There have been stories in the New York Times, the LA Times, CNN, NBC , the Miami Herald and dozens of other traditional media outlets. El Cucuy de la Manana has been talking this up daily.  Videos of the Dreamers have been widely appreciated and appeared on TV. CBS national news plans to use excerpts from two or three of the videos on its weekend news.

The website has gone from 400 visits to nearly 1,700 yesterday. Blogs ranging from the Huffington Post to Crooks and Liars and Alternet are picking it up. So far, anti-immigrants have overwhelmed the comments sections on the Huffington Post and the Dream website. We need to counter them with our own posts.

Today's Dreamer of the Day is Mike. Watch his video here. And then, you'll ready to get on the train and act.

How you can help:
1.      GET ON THE TRAIN. Click here to sign the petition. And send it to ten of your friends. The forwarding instructions will come to you automatically.
2.       LOG ON toour site and post your comments.

Center for Social Advocacy Awarded City of San Diego Fair Housing Contract

El Cajon, CA, June 25, 2007, The City of San Diego's Housing Commission has awarded Center for Social Advocacy the contract to provide Fair Housing services to City of San Diego residents, landlords and property management companies. Center for Social Advocacy already provides fair housing services to the cities of Carlsbad, El Cajon, Escondido, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and Santee, plus the unincorporated eastern portions of San Diego County.

Fair Housing has been a central concern for Center for Social Advocacy for almost their entire 38 years. The term "Fair Housing" denotes a legal framework set into Title VIII of the 1968 Civil Rights Act. Fair housing exists in a community when individuals of similar income have the same range of housing choices regardless of race or color, ancestry or national origin, religion, gender, disability, marital or familial status, sexual orientation, or source of income.

Center for Social Advocacy is the oldest fair housing organization in San Diego County and one of the oldest in the nation. In addition to addressing housing discrimination, based on fair housing laws, Center for Social Advocacy also provides mediation services to many communities, in which they assist tenants and land lords in resolving problems that may not involve discrimination but often do involve unpleasant conflicts that reduce the quality of life for renters and can, when serious, lead to problems like an eviction or the loss of a security deposit.

Center for Social Advocacy's fair housing staff includes bi-lingual housing counselors who assist callers by phone. Staff provides community presentations, testify before city councils, and provide updated information as state of California and federal housing laws change. They do some testing in situations in which they suspect systemic discriminating against prospective renters. Finally they refer renters or prospective renters to state agencies or to private attorneys when it is fairly certain that a family or individual is experiencing bona fide discrimination.

Center for Social Advocacy also produces and distributes a "Handbook on Renting" that is updated annually. It is available in both English and Spanish.

For further information regarding Center for Social Advocacy's Fair Housing Program, or any of their  other civil rights and human rights program or projects, please contact Estela De Los Rios, Director of Human Rights Programs at (619) 444-5700 x 304, [email protected]

 About Center for Social Advocacy

Send your e-mail to protect farm workers from the summer heat.

Despite the new heat regulations, California farm workers are not being protected from the extreme heat they labor under to pick the food we have on our table. We need you to help us ensure no other worker dies due to the many growers who ignore California's new heat laws.

The UFW has begun an outreach program in the fields. The initial findings have farm workers themselves telling us about the harsh conditions they face in the fields.

Jairo Luque tells us about laboring in the carrots...
The water runs out and they do not bring any more. Sometimes they bring tap water, which is not clean. Sometimes the water is hot. That happened today. People were desperate because there was no water. Being without water is dangerous. We are not camels that can be working without water.

Margarita Mendez tells us how the heat's intensity makes farm work difficult...
Last year was a rough time for us especially because of the bad weather, it was extremely hot. I can't even understand how we managed to make it through but it all came down the necessity of having and needing a job.

Grape worker Alfredo Alvarenga elaborates on the pressure workers feel...
We have always had to deal with the heat...There is no way to feel fatigued and take a break; you just have to keep going. Workers are not allowed to take more breaks, because its work time, and they [the supervisors] cannot find you resting.

Martin Zavala labors in the Mecca grape vineyards and had this to say...
In the fields, the temperature is 108-110 degrees. The company provides umbrellas for shade - very little umbrellas. Sometimes the umbrellas are broken and the company takes three or four days to replace them.

Zeferina Castillo labors in the heat with her 17-year-old-daughter.  She worries about the effect the heat has on her family and co-workers...
Last week it was really hot. Last Saturday, four people fainted.

We need your help to protect farm workers. Tell Cal OSHA--the agency responsible for protecting farm workers-that you will not tolerate another death in the fields this summer due to growers ignoring the law.

Please send your e-mail today.

Relay For Life of
Southeastern San Diego

July 21-22, 2007
Jackie Robinson YMCA

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in our community. At the event, we celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

But, Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another. During this event, we honor survivors during the Survivors Lap and we remember those we lost to cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony. We also celebrate life, friendship, and a chance to work together toward a cancer-free future.

Most importantly, Relay gives you the power to help in the fight against cancer. By joining together as volunteers and donors, our efforts help the American Cancer Society strive toward a future where cancer doesn't take the lives of our friends and family.

Sign up today to become a part of the Relay phenomenon. Together we will fuel the work - and the hope - that can help make a cancer-free future a reality.
