The Equality Alliance
Invites you and your organization to a meeting to discuss the formation of a
countywide Education Consortium and a potential campaign to mandate A-G courses for all students.

Monday, June 18, 2007, from 6-7:30 pm
City Heights Center Conference Room
4305 University Ave, Suite 610, San Diego

Please RSVP to Julian Quinonez at 858.384.6201 or equalitysandiego@gmail.com .
For more information on the Equality Alliance, go to www.equalitysandiego.org

Education Consortium
The Equality Alliance proposes the formation of an Education Consortium to provide a framework for cooperation and coordination among organizations who are engaged in increasing access to educational opportunities for the educationally and economically disadvantaged and the ethnically underrepresented in San Diego County.

The proposed Consortium is modeled on the Immigrant Rights Consortium (IRC), which is made up of 25 faith, labor, legal, and community organizations governed by a cooperative agreement to pursue common goals within a clear decision-making structure. Since its formation in February 2007, IRC has been successful in pulling organizations together to work more effectively to (1) communicate with each other through a listserve, (2) provide information and resource links to the public through a website (drat site at http://members.cox.net/immigrantsandiego), and (3) raise more than $25,000 to pursue common goals.? ?

An Education Consortium could be similarly effective and could be made up of K-12, higher education, community, legal, labor, and workforce organizations. The suggested goals of the Education Consortium would be to:
  • Propose, pursue, and support policies and practices in K-12 that increases the college-going rates of underrepresented and underprivileged students.
  • Propose, pursue, and support policies and practices in higher education that increase the participation and success of underrepresented and underprivileged students.
  • Educate students and parents about their rights and the resources available to them to access educational opportunities.
  • Educate the public about the state of access and the importance of increasing access so that all portions of the county are able to contribute to the economy.
We invite your input on an Education Consortium and welcome your participation at the June 18th meeting.

"A-G Courses For All" Campaign
Although school children in San Diego are ethnically diverse (43% Latino, 35% White, 7% African American, 5% Asian, 5% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 1% Native American), many of the schools they attend are segregated by ethnicity and by opportunity. Schools with a relatively higher percentage of Latino, Native American and African American students, offer relatively fewer A-G courses (math, science, history/social science, English, foreign language, and art courses), which are required to enter one of California's public universities and are also important in preparing students to participate in the workforce and in our democracy.

Predominantly white high schools such as Torrey Pines, Rancho Bernardo, and La Jolla offer more than twice as many A-G courses than do predominantly black and brown high schools such as Montgomery, El Cajon, and Hoover. They also offer more than four times as many Advanced Placement (AP) courses which increase grade point averages, prepare students to do college-level work, and allow students to earn credit towards a bachelor's degree.

Since many Latino, Native American and African American students in the county attend segregated schools in which they are deprived of the course offereings and educational opportunities that exist in other schools, it comes as no surprise that these students on average complete A-G courses at less than half the rate of white, Asian, and Filipino students. This renders them ineligible to attend our public universities and ill prepared to participate in the workforce and in civic life. Given that Latinos, Native Americans and African Americans make up more than half of our student population in the county, if we do not address the severe disparity of opportunities in education, we will perpetuate an ethnic underclass and strain our economy.

Please join us on June 18th to discuss a possible campaign to mandate A-G courses for all students. Similar campaigns have been successful in San Jose and in the Los Angeles area, and we will have at our meeting the Executive Director of Californians for Justice to learn more about those campaigns.

Roundtable Discussion on Benito Juarez
We are looking forward to meeting with you on Sunday June 17 at 2 p.m. for a round table discussion of Benito Juarez. Of special interest is his work in separating the church from the state, and the way what he achieved for Mexico influenced other societies. A representative of the Consulate of Mexico is likely to join us. Our meeting will be in the Wangenheim Room on the third floor of San Diego Central Library, 820 "E" St., on the corner of Eighth Avenue. This is the rare books room, next to the elevator. There is a Five Star parking lot at the rear of the Library building, and you can park there free. This event will probably be listed in the READER next week and it is likely that we will get some visitors from among the public. Francis Mortyn

Tell lawmakers to make it easier for farm workers to organize

SB 180 will be heard by the Assembly Labor Committee tomorrow

Help farm workers get the tool they really need. Current laws are not being enforced and despite laws to protect workers, people are suffering in the fields. Bathrooms are often far away and disgusting--and sometimes there are no bathrooms. Sexual harassment is rampant. Too many workers work in the fields for 14 hours while their overtime pay is ignored. Workers are exposed to skin ailments, rashes and eye problems due to contact with pesticides.

Although the state of California has many good laws designed to protect workers, these laws can not be enforced. With over 400,000 farm workers working on over 80,000 farms--sometimes for only weeks at a time--it would cost tens of millions of dollars to enforce these laws. Allowing workers to choose union representation gives them the tools they need to help themselves. It is time to end the suffering--workers lives are hard enough.

Workers deserve a system which will allow them to vote without grower intimidation, retaliation and the possibility of losing their jobs. That's why the UFW-backed SB180 "Fair Treatment of Farm Workers Act" (D: Migden) is so important. SB180 will allow farm workers to choose a union by either a secret ballot election or a majority sign-up process. This could protect workers from grower abuses such as:

Rocio Ontiveros used to cry over how one of her supervisors harassed her.  When she first started learning to work in grapes, he would call her a "monkey" and tell her she did not know what she was doing. He yelled at her constantly, at one point, throwing grapes in her face. "No one fought back," she said. "We needed our jobs. We all have families to support."

Teodoro Gutierrez noticed dirt in what was supposed to be his crew's drinking water. He decided to let his foreman know to change it. Instead of providing workers with clean, drinking water, the foreman threw the dirty water out and left the crew thirsty for the remainder of the hot work day. "The foreman, they always cheat us," he said.

Margarita Gonzalez dreads the summer months when she has to work up to nine hours outside in the hot sun. Despite California laws designed to protect farm workers from heat exposure, Margarita's experiences reveal the laws are not always enforced. "We sweat a lot and feel like fainting. We want to sit in the shade, but if you sit down, you will get fired."

Gloria Ramirez says female workers suffer most in the fields. "If a young female worker doesn't give into her supervisor's sexual requests, he will fire her or make her life a living hell. He'll punish all of us for days--with no food, water or restroom breaks."  She says the break times workers are given are not long enough. "The bathrooms are located too far for us to use," she said. "There have been times I have really had to use the restroom, but they are so far, I could not make it in time and accidentally had to urinate on myself."

Please help give workers like Rocio, Teodoro, Margarita, Gloria, and others the tool they need. SB180 will be in the Assembly Labor Committee tomorrow. Dozens of farm workers will be present to ask lawmakers to help them. Please join these farm workers in their fight by e-mailing members of the committee today and tell them to support this critical bill.

DUKE CUNNINGHAM was an All-American success story. The Midwestern boy who went off to war, became a hero, and rode his fame into Congress -- even bragged that Tom Cruise played him in a popular movie. But the fall of this "Top Gun" was almost as epic and just as cinematic. Today he sits in prison, branded as the most corrupt member of Congress in U.S. history.

Now, members of the team that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for sending Cunningham to prison uncover new details in a story still unfolding in Washington. The Wrong Stuff chronicles Cunningham's rise and his sordid fall. It is the saga of a man who came to believe his own press clippings and developed an enormous sense of self-entitlement, a man strong enough to brave enemy fire but too weak to resist the corrupt contractors and lobbyists in the nation's capital. It is also the story of the shadowy side of Washington today. More than just a portrait of one crooked politician, this is an inside look at how our system allowed this to happen. The Wrong Stuff provides the context for Cunningham's misdeeds and shows that more than one man's venality was involved. Indeed, there were things darkly wrong with Washington that invited Cunningham-and others-to steal, often putting American soldiers and Marines at risk during wartime.

If you want to understand the recent outcry over congressional corruption, then you need to understand how Cunningham and his contractor friends used the government to enrich themselves. This penetrating, witty, and gossipy analysis of how they stole and how they got caught makes for a fascinating read with a lesson for all Americans.

roll call play poster
"Roll Call"

A Latino play by film producer and writer Alfredo Lugo about the Latino Vietnam war experience and how it affected a group of high school friends from East Los Angeles will open in Los Angeles August 29 - September 22, 2007.  The opening day is historically significant because it celebrates the 37Th Anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium.

Alfredo Lugo's play, directed by Ricardo Lopez, ("The Silver Dollar" & "Soldado Razo" plays) will be performed at the El Gallo Plaza Theater located at: 4545 E. Cesar Chavez Avenue, East Los Angeles, California.

Opening and closing nights will honor Vietnam veterans in attendance. It is being sponsored by El Camino Real Chapter of the American GI Forum and the Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture. Alfredo Lugo is a Vietnam war veteran and long time Chicano writer and producer.

Interest in the play is growing beyond East Los Angeles. USC is interested in having a performance on campus on September 16Th and Su Teatro in Denver Colorado is also interested. Raul Izaguirre, former founder and CEO of NCLR, is interested in bringing "Roll Call" to Phoenix, Arizona.  Hopefully other Latino & Latina leaders in cities across the country will bring "Roll Call" to their communities.

We, the Latino community, must not forget our Vietnam veteranos, otherwise our participation in all wars will continue to be excluded  from films, theater, books, cultural centers and the national memory of our country.

More information to come.  alfredo.lugo@verizon.net
