Baptist Health System Promotes Retail Pharmacy, Drives Revenues"Based upon the early results from our pilot, there is potential to double the volume of prescriptions filled by our pharmacy." - Janice Rogers, director of retail pharmacies, Baptist Health System
Background: Experience shows that engaging patients in decisions regarding their care improves both quality and satisfaction outcomes. Interactive Patient Care technology enables patients to provide input and make informed choices about their care while in the hospital and even after their hospital stay. Baptist Health System in Florida has been using the GetWellNetwork system for nearly five years to engage patients in their care process. Early in 2008, Baptist began piloting the GetWellNetwork retail pharmacy application. The impact findings have been outstanding.
Opportunity: Baptist Medical Center offers patients and guests an outpatient pharmacy conveniently located near its main lobby. Baptist Medical Center leadership saw an opportunity to increase patient convenience and pharmacy revenues by using the GetWellNetwork system to bring the pharmacy to the patient.
Solution: Janice Rogers, director of retail pharmacies, worked with Jon Daniell, senior account manager, GetWellNetwork, to design and install a retail pharmacy application that offers patients the option to have their discharge medication prescriptions filled and delivered prior to discharge from the hospital.
Application: Inpatients are informed through the GetWellNetwork system about the convenient option of having their discharge medications filled before they leave the hospital.
- Each day, each patient in the pilot receives two scheduled alerts asking if they would like to have their discharge medications filled by the hospital retail pharmacy.
- If a patient chooses to have his/her prescriptions filled, a message is sent to the pharmacy via print out and email for follow-up.
- Baptist has installed an internal workflow where the pharmacy will then call the patient to acknowledge their interest.
- The nurse faxes the prescription to the pharmacy and the pharmacy staff collects all other necessary information by directly contacting the patient.
This application is easily activated and does not require interfaces or significant use of staff time. The content, notifications, and timing of this alert are all configurable by the hospital. The GetWellNetwork Outcomes Group also works with hospital and pharmacy leadership to design workflow processes to ensure prompt follow-through with the patient while minimizing the impact on pharmacy operations.
Outcome/Results: This pharmacy service offers patients an easy way to have their medications filled and ready for them before they leave the hospital. The convenience increases patient satisfaction and it aids in the hospital's quality efforts to assure medication compliance. This service is also a very effective way to generate incremental volume and revenues for the hospital.
"This simple application has served to broaden the services made available and taken advantage of by our patients at Baptist Medical Center. Up until now, we did not have a good or easy way to reach patients to offer our services. By using the retail pharmacy application available through GetWellNetwork, we put the ownership for extending pharmacy services to hospitalized patients on the pharmacy, taking the burden off the nurse. This tool opened the door to partner with nursing to better meet the needs of our patients," says Rogers.
According to Rogers, the volume of prescriptions continues to grow. "Based upon the early results from our pilot, there is potential to double the volume of prescriptions filled by our pharmacy."
Additional Information: If you would like additional information and a list of FAQ's regarding this product feature, or if you are interested in an impact analysis for this service at your hospital, please contact Julia Southerton at jsoutherton@getwellnetwork.com.

Television Signal Broadcasting Standard
As
you are likely aware, the Federal Communications Commission has
mandated a change to the official method for transmitting television
signals in the United States, from its current analog standard of NTSC
to a digital standard of ATSC. Broadcasting companies are to be
transmitting with that new digital standard by February 19, 2009.
One
change that appears to be an absolute for that date is that "off-air"
channels will be shut down. There will no longer be any "off-air"
signals that could be picked up by antennas. So, if you have been
reliant upon an antenna to receive "off-air" signals for local
television programming, you will not be able to do so after February
19, 2009.
While mandating this change to the broadcasting
standard, the FCC has also indicated that it is requiring cable
broadcast companies to continue analog transmissions until 2012 (and
possibly beyond). We expect to continue to see
the cable broadcasters gradual
shifting of some high demand channels to their "digital only" tiers, which will continue to reduce the selection of
channels/ programming available from analog signals.
GetWellNetwork Helping You Prepare
Your
account manager is currently taking an inventory of the technology
components and services involved in your delivery of television viewing
to your patients, including:
- Television type (CRT, LCD, HD)
- PatientLife Console type (G2, 6386, i2020)
- Video server (type and quantity)
- Video channels
- Transmission (cable or satellite)
- Content provider
With
that information in hand, we will be reviewing the stated
plans/intentions of your broadcast providers, and we will be preparing recommended configurations for your system.
Your
account manager will keep you updated on our progress in completing
these recommendations for you. We expect to have them completed by the
end of September. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please
contact your regional director.
