Dear Educator,

Spring forward and get ready to prevent! April 20th, or 4/20 as it is formally known, is a day commonly used to glorify and celebrate the illegal use of marijuana around the world (read article below). With marijuana being one of the more popular drugs of choice, this would be a perfect time to remind students of it's dangerous consequences, and explain how it is sometimes viewed as a gateway drug to others. This may also be a great opportunity to reintroduce the Natural High DVD Series to the youth within your influence.

Last but not least, all of the 'My Natural High' winners from the October-December 2007 contest are now up on www.naturalhigh.org. Check it out to see if your students won. Winners for the December-February contest will be posted shortly. The contests are temporarily suspended until we launch our third contest, coming soon!

Stay Tuned,

Teacher Organizes Natural High Network
Great minds think alike as Steve Pitkin, the Prevention and Intervention Specialist at Lake Stevens High School, organized a club that provides cultural activities for sober fun. These activities include open mics for students during lunches, a student made film festival, a Guitar-Hero gaming event during lunches, and an open-mic at a community park for all ages. Pitkin said the club was first founded in 1999 at Snohornish High School and has since evolved into a dynamic way to help keep students active, social, and sober.

Must Read: Same Story Different Perspective
You may have heard them on television or seen them showcased at Starbucks. Two books just released called, "Beautiful Boy" and "Tweak" were written about the tragic story of Nic Sheff and his addiction to methamphetamine. What makes these books unique is that one is written from the father's perspective and the later is from the user's (son's) experience. New truths shine through as readers see the damaging effects of drugs to both user and non user alike. Clues and advice are given from both authors as they share their outlook, pain, and what they wish they would have done differently. Read full article and excerpts.

Southern California Combats 4/20
Every year, in cities across the U.S., April 20th signifies a day of praise, worship and glorification of the illegal drug, marijuana. Although 4/20 only occurs once a year, the time 4:20 (usually p.m.) is also closely linked to this subculture, and is often acknowledged as the time to smoke up every day.You can find more information about 4/20 and its origins, along with various links to it's participation and events here. Because of this problem, the North Coastal Prevention Coalition in Southern California decided to focus on a prevention effort specific to this particular day called 4/20 Remix. "WOW!!! I shared Natural High 3 with my 4-6 grade students and they were speechless during the whole video. Terrific impact on the students. The video covered everything I want the students to hear. Please continue your mission. Thank you!!"
